Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid Information

Did you know that your car filters out its own harmful gasoline vapors to protect the environment? Most modern vehicles contain an evaporative emissions control system (EVAP) that reduces the amount of residual gases released from the fuel cell. There are many parts to the overall system, but a key component is a vapor canister vent solenoid. This is a process that works in the background and isn't something you think about, but a check engine light or a failed state emissions test could mean action is needed immediately.

Whether you are looking for a vapor canister vent valve that is OEM equipment or an aftermarket manufacturer, PartsGeek.com offers selections from top brands such as AC Delco, Mopar, Dorman, and Bosch. With our 30-day return policy you can confidently shop for the parts you need.

What is a Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid?

The EVAP system contains a series of tubes, valves and parts that essentially seal the fuel cell components and collect evaporative vapors in a small canister. Filters inside this unit turn the emissions into gases that are not as detrimental to air quality. Since pressure builds up from it being a closed system, the solenoid allows a vent valve to automatically open to release that pressure. When the vapor canister vent solenoid stops working, the process cannot work correctly and the part needs to be replaced.

Troubleshooting issues that occur in this unit can be tricky, but there are certain things that can alert you. One of the first signs will be an illuminated check engine light. Your mechanic can hook up a diagnostic tool that provides a related problem code, and if that code references the EVAP system there is a good chance the solenoid is the culprit. Other symptoms could be a buildup of pressure in the gas tank that may be noticeable during fill-ups, or a higher level of noxious gases that appear during an emissions test.

How Much is a Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid?

A vapor canister vent valve can range in price from $20 to over $100. This range depends on several factors such as the make of the car, the model year, the part manufacturer and if it is OEM or aftermarket. There are several options to select from for most vehicle types. The PartsGeek.com search feature helps you narrow down the compatible parts for your car so you don't have to guess if it will fit or not.

How Do You Replace a Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid?

Every automobile is different, but in most cases there are no special tools needed to replace the valve. It is often located under the car near the fuel cell. You should disconnect the battery before performing any work. Otherwise, it's a matter of gaining access to the area and removing the part from its attachment points. There are clips, wires, and tubes connected to the solenoid which should be easy to remove. These should also be checked for wear and damage. Some models come with the associated purge cylinder as well, so all parts of the system are replaced at the same time.

I could not install this model. It was the one specified by the website but the actual model I needed PV337. I had to go to the local parts store to get the right one. Even their database showed the same incorrect one as was shipped to me. Glad I brought the old one with me.
