Turbocharger Information

One of those first things that comes to mind when talking about a vehicle is engine performance. Whether it's keeping your car operating a peak efficiency like it was fresh from the factory or adding additional horsepower, this output is what keeps you moving. A turbocharger is a component that is part of the functionality of many combustion engines. While not all vehicles are equipped with one, their popularity is increasing with automobile manufacturers and aftermarket tuners alike due to their efficiency and power gains.

PartsGeek.com has a selection of turbochargers from known OEM and aftermarket manufacturers such as Mopar, Mitsubishi, Borg Warner, and Dorman. If you're hesitant about purchasing a turbo, our 30-day return policy can set your mind at ease.

What is a Turbocharger?

Naturally aspirated engines, or those lacking any sort of forced induction such as a turbocharger, are surprisingly inefficient pieces of machinery. Turbos help to improve this by utilizing wasted exhaust gases and using them to force more air back into the engine intake valves. This air is compressed, which provides an associated power output to the vehicle.

A turbocharger consists of two main components - a turbine and a compressor. The turbine spins by way of the pressurized exhaust gases coming from the engine, which in turn powers the compressor. The size of the turbine is an important consideration in the design since it plays a role in the amount of turbo lag and the amount of backpressure created. The compressor then uses this rotational energy to compress the air, which is then fed forcefully back into the intake cycle. This pressure is often referred to as "boost." The additional amount of compressed air being forced into the engine is what creates the increased efficiency and horsepower. One reason for using this technology is that a relatively smaller engine can be installed with a turbocharger, and it can match or even beat the output and efficiency of a larger naturally aspirated one.

How Much is a Turbocharger?

The cost of a turbo varies widely in price from several hundred to a few thousand dollars. The reason for this is due to several different factors:

  • The manufacturer of the item
  • The make, model, and year of vehicle
  • Construction and performance output of the turbocharger
  • Whether it is for gasoline or diesel engine
  • If it is made for OEM or aftermarket
  • Brand new or refurbished part

Can You Install a Turbo On Any Car?

Technically, a turbocharger can be installed on any normally aspirated engine. Approximately one quarter of all new vehicles now come with one installed from the factory, so they are designed to operate with one and replacement is relatively straightforward. However, adding a turbo to a vehicle that does not have one can become a bit more complicated. Since the engine was not intended to operate with that amount of performance, additional parts and components likely need to be replaced or modified to account for the added compression. Changes to fuel injectors, fuel system, and cooling components may also be required. If you are unsure, consult a professional who has experience making such a conversion.
