Tailgate NetAccording to some sources, lowering or removing the tailgate on a truck bed can reduce the drag on the truck and increase the vehicle's fuel efficiency. (Other sources contend that the closed tailgate helps to create a vortex of air the truck bed, which actually decreases the air drag and increases fuel efficiency.) Those that believe that lowering the truck's tailgate improves efficiency still face another problem: without the tailgate, loads in the truck can slide out of the truck bed. Tailgate nets solve the problem of drag in the truck's bed because they are perforated to allow air to flow through the net. At the same time, the tailgate net can restrain any cargo that happens to be sliding around in the truck bed. Some truck owners replace their tailgates with nets because they consider the nets more attractive. Although most nets are shaped like simple black rectangular grids, decorative nets are also available. These may be patterned with skull shapes or the shape of the American flag. Not all tailgate nets are equal; some nets are not rated to retain a load. Even the strongest nets are still weaker than the original metal tailgate, so some truck owners forgo the nets. Instead of installing a tailgate net, they install a perforated metal tailgate. These metal tailgates are built like fences, so that they are strong enough to retain a load while still allowing air to flow through the tailgate. Even these super-strong tailgates will have one drawback when compared to the original tailgate: they will allow loads of granular material such as sand or dirt to slip through the holes. This can be prevented by putting a tarpaulin in the truck bed before adding the load. Tailgate nets are usually installed using hooks or adjustable straps which hook through the holes that were originally used to latch the tailgate. For some tailgate nets, it may be necessary to drill new holes in the sides of the truck in order to install the net.

Tailgate Net Information

Tailgate Net

Are you in the market for a lightweight alternative to a tailgate? Whether you want to replace the back end due to damage or to increase your gas mileage, the net is a great option. The tailgate net allows you to secure small cargo in the bed of your truck, but it provides a completely different aesthetic appeal than the typical tailgate. You may be able to get a net in a variety of colors, so you can choose to make a statement with a bold color or keep it subtle with a neutral color.

When you shop on PartsGeek.com for truck tailgate nets, you get to choose from hundreds of options. This means you can find the net that is right for your truck and your budget. You can get products from top manufacturers, such as Covercraft. If something is not quite right with the component you end up buying, you can rest easy knowing we have a 30-day return policy.

What is a tailgate net?

A tailgate net is a truck bed accessory that has similar functions to a tailgate. However, unlike your typical tailgate, the net does not stop air from flowing through the back end of your pickup. Usually made from nylon or vinyl-coated polyester, the net can help keep contents in your bed without using a tailgate.

How much is a new tailgate net?

Truck tailgate nets are usually fairly inexpensive, but the exact price does depend on certain factors, such as:

  • The year, make and model of your truck
  • The mounting hardware included with the netting
  • The manufacturer of the product
  • The material of the net

Many of the nets available from PartsGeek.com cost between $30 and $50.

How do I install a tailgate net?

In order to get the most use out of your new product, you need to make sure it is properly installed. It is best to follow the manufacturer instructions. Generally, you will have to:

  • Remove the tailgate. You may also have to temporarily remove the lighting fixtures.
  • Position the net at the rear of the truck with an assistant, so you can make sure it is snug and determine where the mounting brackets have to be installed.
  • Mark the drilling locations on both sides of the vehicle. You can use tape to avoid scratching the paint around where you will be drilling.
  • Use a drill bit to make holes where the mounting brackets will be installed. Clear away the metal scraps after you are done drilling all of the holes.
  • Install the mounting brackets with the appropriate screws, and make sure each is tightened properly. Avoid over-tightening as that can lead to weakened screws.
  • Install the net by putting the straps through the mounting brackets.
  • Make sure the net is properly snug. The net should not sag. If it does sag, it could flap around while you are driving.

The easy installation lets you get back to hauling stuff in your truck bed quickly.

The shipping was quick, very easy to install, i had to use two sheet metal screws because i could not get nut on because of the construction on my 2010 toyota tundra (no fault of Pro Net). The hardware works fine and the fasteners work great, you won't be disappointed. - Joe P - Pennsylvania

I bought the expensive model because the one I bought at an auto parts store on the instructions said for performance only not to hold cargo The Pro Net said nothing about performance only except again in the instrucions. It would be helpful to know that up front. - Dan
