Tailgate Information

A tailgate is simply referred to as the back "gate" or "door" of primarily a truck but sometimes also a SUV, wagon, or similar form of vehicle that has a back door, which can be opened to load cargo or other items and is hinged. Sometimes a tailgate may refer to the rear door of a hatchback car or similar vehicle in which the back door opens up. Moreover, it could also refer to vehicles with lateral rear door openings, which means that the door opens to one side rather than up or down. The tailgate can be used for a number of things. The tailgate can be let down in a truck in order to get up in the bed and load furniture or other items in which you need to move from one location to another. Once everything is loaded inside the bed of the truck, you can put the tailgate up so that none of the contents will fall out of the truck. Aside from loading, the tailgate can also be let down to sit on. You may often hear of tailgate being linked to party for a tailgate party. A tailgate party is known as a social gathering that takes place after a large event, which could range anywhere from a local school football game to a concert. Sometimes a tailgate party can just take place at any time and is often located in parking lots or an open field depending upon the situation and the people involved. Aside from a tailgate party being held after an event, it can also be held before to "get the party started" so to speak. Grills can be brought, coolers with favorite drinks, and much more. Regardless of the reason of a tailgate party, the tailgate is always let down for convenient sitting without the need for fold-up chairs.

A truck without a tailgate is really only half a truck. From hauling equipment and landscaping loads to transporting lumber and furniture, tail gates keep items in the back secure, and can be lowered to extend the carrying capacity of the bed. And, of course, they make an ideal BBQ venue!

At you will find durable, dependable tail gates from industry leading brands like Action Crash, Crown Automotive, Husky Liner and Smittybilt, including both shells and assemblies with complete hardware.

Our company takes prides in offering an incredible selection of quality parts at great prices, excellent customer service and fast delivery. And, our 30-day return policy helps us to make sure that you get the part you need.

Look up a specific tail gate by keyword phrase or part number, or browse our inventory by make or year of your vehicle.

What is a tailgate?

The tail gate is simply the hinged, drop down flap that allows you to close and open the back of a truck or other sports utility vehicle. Built for durability, tailgates are useful for securing items like tools, equipment and other cargo, including holding in heavy payloads of dirt or gravel.

How much do replacement tail gates cost?

The cost of a new tail gate will vary by make, model and year of your current vehicle. The price of a replacement will also depend on whether you just need a shell, or you want to purchase a completely new tailgate with all new hardware. Most of the shells and tail gates on fall somewhere in the range of $100 and $500.

What is the difference between a tail gate shell and a tail gate assembly?

A tail gate shell consists of only the gate itself. It does not have any hardware installed (e.g., hinges, latches, harnesses). If your current gate is rusted, dented or scratched, but still has functional hardware, you will only need to purchase a new tail gate shell. Once you receive the new gate, simply swap in the mechanical parts from the old one (this process shouldn't take more than 30 minutes or so).

On the other hand, a tail gate assembly includes all the hardware needed. If you have a gate that is severely damaged or whose parts aren't functioning (or if you don't have a tail gate at all), you will want to find a complete assembly, rather than just a shell.

How do I install a new tail gate?

Replacing a tail gate is pretty straightforward: open and prop up the gate, remove the torx bolts on either side (the bolts that secure the retaining cables), position the gate at a roughly 45 degree angle, slide the passenger side of the gate out of the connector and lift the gate to the right and outward. To put the new gate in place, simply follow these steps in reverse. In some cases you may also need to disconnect or remove electrical components.

If you are installing a new shell, you will you need to transfer over hardware as well (once you have removed the old one). Depending on the specific vehicle, this may include locking mechanisms and lock cover plates, handles, connection bushings, and the side latches that keep the gate in the closed position.

In either case, you will want to make sure that you do any painting before you install the new tail gate!

I received the tailgate in the time specified. The tailgate fits like the OEM tailgate it is replacing. I looks like it is put together well. Only time will tell now.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Tailgate

Reviewer: Eric from Quincy Il

I was very doubtful that this really cheap tailgate was going to be a good buy. Went it arrived just a few days later, I was honestly surprised. It was "perfect" , very high quality. I couldn't believe that such a good deal was possible, especially off the internet. Since that first purchase, I have ordered many parts with the same excellent results. I also like the many options of parts. Not like autozone and the others where you get a choice of one or two options. Don't hesitate to try this website out. It's truely one of those " it is too good to be true" but really is. I have told scores of people about this company. I have never posted an opinion of anything on the internet before. I felt that expressing my complete satisfaction was the lease I can do. In case I haven't made it clear.....AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. MUST TRY THIS OUT!!!!!!
