Every driver wants their car to steer and handle well – that much is a given. To ensure that your car steers efficiently and effectively, it is important that your entire steering mechanism be in good shape. Even a small structural defect or weakness in the mechanism can cause problems on down the road – so you’ll want to take extra care that you maintain your steering mechanism well. One key component in your steering mechanism is the Pitman arm. This component attaches to the steering gear sector shaft. It serves to create the linear motion used to direct the wheels of the car by converting the angular motion produced by the sector shaft. This component, then, is a key part in actually making your vehicle steer. The arm itself supports the drag link with a ball joint. It is also related to the idler arm, which then connects to the vehicle’s frame. All told, your steering system is a complex mechanical system that is absolutely critical to proper vehicle function. With a little love and TLC, however, your steering mechanism will keep you and your car moving for years to come. If you need assistance choosing the right components for your steering mechanism, you can rely on the great service and product knowledge at PartsGeek.com.

What is a Pitman arm?

Your Pitman arm is the first step in your steering linkage, after the steering wheel and steering box. It uses the power coming from the steering box to physically drag the entire linkage back and forth. While all of your steering components are important, this arm is one of the most problematic when it goes bad. That's because any fault or looseness in this primary part translates to a loss of control through all of the rest of the system.

These parts are made of tough metals with corrosion-resistant properties. That's because they're subjected to incredible stress in daily operation. They also have to sit next to the road where they're exposed to harsh chemicals and salts.

When you're trying to find your Pitman arm, look between your primary steering link and your steering box for a small metal piece. It should look relatively clean and rust-free, and it should be intact without strange bends or cracks. It should move only when you move the steering wheel: Even a small amount of play is usually unacceptable. If you can't find it, check your maintenance manual for some hints, and be sure to wear proper eye protection and safety gear while you're searching.

How much is a new Pitman arm?

Steering system linkage components like your Pitman arm are forged out of high-quality metals and fit with precision-manufactured parts. That's why, even though they might seem like a simple hunk of metal, they're sometimes be pricey. The average cost of a new Pitman arm is between $50-200, based on:

  • The model of your vehicle
  • Types of bearings
  • Design of the arm
  • General performance level

When should you replace your Pitman arm?

Steering problems are the most common cause for replacing this part. Look for:

  • Slow steering response
  • Shimmying steering while driving over smooth roads
  • Muddy or slushy steering
  • No steering response
  • Vehicle temporarily loses control when you hit a bump

One special case when you need a new Pitman arm is when you lift your suspension. If you've recently done this and started to see major bump steering or loss of turn radius, it's a good bet you need a dropped Pitman arm to counteract the new height difference.
