One important factor in rating any car is fuel economy. As fuel prices rise across the nation, the last thing you want is for your car to be gobbling any more fuel than is necessary. As a general rule, then, it’s important to ensure that the elements of your car that impact fuel economy are in good repair. One such component is the engine knock sensor, which is partially responsible for ensuring that the engine and fuel delivery systems are timed properly and that the fuel/air mixture being sent to the engine is correct. The job of the sensor is to prevent fuel from detonating in the cylinder rather than burning quickly. A good sensor will improve your fuel economy by ensuring that fuel in your engine cylinders is used properly – while a bad sensor will cripple your fuel economy by allowing your engine to work in a way that is rather detrimental to overall function and economy. To keep your vehicle’s fuel economy high, take care that you use the best parts for your repairs and maintenance. A great place to find the parts you need is online at PartsGeek.com, where you’ll be able to access a great selection of parts at unbeatable prices.

What is a knock sensor?
An auto's knock sensor is important for ensuring the proper functioning of the fuel delivery system. These engine sensors can detect sub-audible knocking that may be an indicator that the combustion process is not taking place as it should. When the knock sensor picks up abnormal pings or knocking, it communicates with the onboard computer. In turn the computer slows engine timing in order to prevent potentially damaging pre-ignition. A sensor that is working as it should helps to maintain good fuel economy and engine performance.
How much do knock sensors cost?
Most knock sensors fall within the price range of $50 and $200. Cost will depend on a variety of factors, especially the specific make and model of your car. You should be able to find both OE (original equipment) and OE equivalent sensors.
What are the symptoms of a bad knock sensor?
The most obvious signs of potential knock sensor failure are unusual engine sounds, diminished fuel economy and sluggish acceleration. These will be especially noticeable when traveling at highway speeds, hauling a heavy load, or at other times when the engine is under extra duress. The knocking, sputtering or pounding that may occur are caused by pre-ignition: the combustion of fuel within the cylinders.
How can I test the knock sensor?
Unfortunately, by the time a faulty knock sensor becomes obvious, it's already past time to replace the part. To prevent waiting too long, you can easily test your sensor using a multimeter or voltmeter to detect electrical continuity.

This sensor looks just like the stock one I pulled out and has thus far after 4 hours of driving got rid of the check engine light, at first i didnt know if the code from the check engine light ment my car was knocking or if the sensor was bad i waited a couple weeks and the light check engine light would keep showing its face, replacing the sensor did it - Rphuggen0627
Product works great and is relatively easy to install once you remove the air filter housing. You do need a long socket extension to reach the bolt from the top of the engine though. I used a long one and short one to be able to turn the bolt. - John N
