Replacement Intercooler Information
Choose from top brands including: Action Crash, APDI, Nissens, TYC, Mopar, Valeo, Behr, Genuine and Hella.
If you have a turbocharged or supercharged forced induction internal combustion engine, chances are pretty good that you are focused on attaining the best performance possible. An engine that comes “off the rack” from the dealer or the shelf of the shop may well not meet your needs: you’re more interested in parts and systems that go above and beyond the basics. In a forced induction engine, temperature control and great performance are key – so you’ll want to do everything possible to boost both. This is why your engine relies on an intercooler, which is a heat exchange device that works via air-to-air or air-to-liquid principles. This component, which is also known as a charge air cooler, increases the density of air that passes through the intake. Denser air allows for more volumetric efficiently – which means that more air and fuel are present in the cylinders for each cycle. This leads to dramatically increased engine output. With proper planning and attention, you can ensure that your forced induction engine works as well as possible. For all the performance-boosting parts you need, shop at PartsGeek.com.

A Valeo Intercooler is usually installed by the front grill or on top of the car's engine.
That extra boost from your supercharger or turbocharger feels great. It also contributes to your safety out on the road. When you're passing on the highway or trying to get out of a dangerous situation, you depend on that extra kick of power. Your turbo intercooler is instrumental in maximizing the amount of performance gain you get from your turbocharger systems, so get it fixed when you notice a problem.
While the name of this part might lead you to think that intercoolers are somewhere in the middle of your turbo system, they're actually most commonly positioned at the end. That's because hot super-compressed air from the turbos needs to be cooled before it enters your combustion chambers. This increases the concentration of oxygen and prevents pre-ignition events that can disrupt your engine timing. Overall, this part increases your performance by reducing problems and increasing efficiency of air delivery.
Shop our selection at PartsGeek.com and find the best manufacturers of turbo components and more. We have leading intercooler brands like TYC, AKG, Action Crash, Valeo, Modine, Nissens, Genuine, Behr, Mopar, APDI, Hella and OEM. We're also proud to carry millions of other parts, including everything else you need for your vehicle maintenance and upgrades. Best yet, it's all discounted up to 80% and covered by a 30-day return policy.
What is an intercooler?
Your turbocharged or supercharged vehicle uses a system of devices to compress air in order to deliver more oxygen to your cylinders. This provides more explosive power, increasing your engine performance. One of the issues facing these systems is that the compression creates a lot of heat.
Your turbo intercooler allows heat to exit the system before it gets to the combustion chambers of your engine cylinders. This makes your turbo system safe to use. It also decreases inefficiencies associated with pre-ignition, a phenomenon that causes fuel to burn before it's supposed to.
Your intercooler will look a lot like a radiator, partly because the purposes of the two parts are very similar. Look along your intake and turbo system for a part that has some metal fins. These fins allow heat to dissipate evenly, and they're a common element of most intercooler designs. If you can't locate the part, check your vehicle's maintenance and service manual for more details about the position and appearance.
How much is an intercooler?
Your vehicle's turbo intercooler is a necessary part of your turbocharged or supercharged air supply system. There are also some aftermarket upgrades out there designed to provide a better ratio between pressure and temperature reduction than factory parts. More temperature reduction per unit of pressure reduction means better performance, generally speaking.
Performance intercoolers can cost over $1,000. Most standard replacement parts will run you somewhere between $80-600. Prices vary on:
- Compactness of design
- Materials used in the intercooler
- Performance specifications
- Make and model of the vehicle
Why should you replace your intercooler?
The main reason to switch out an intercooler is increased performance. On one hand, replacing a broken part will get you back up to the engine efficiency and horsepower your vehicle manufacturer intended. It also reduces heat stress on your engine. This extends the life of all of your systems.
On the other hand, replacing a functioning factory intercooler with a performance part allows cooler air to enter your combustion chambers. This gives you better performance out of the same turbochargers or superchargers.
