The Ignition lock cylinder on your car is the part that you insert the key into when you start it. Most people own their vehicle for many years and never experience trouble with the lock cylinder. But when trouble does come, it's usually very inconvenient and very expensive. If you have trouble turning the key to start the car or you can't turn the key at all, it probably means the ignition lock cylinder has broken. You will not be able to start your car, no matter how much jiggling and forcing you attempt to do - and this will often mean a trip to the mechanic. The cylinder cannot be repaired--it has to be replaced--and the replacement procedure often involves scary sounding things like pulling, dropping and drilling--and can involve working unnervingly close to airbag deployment hardware--something that is very dangerous. The tricky part about dealing with ignition cylinders is that they are often tied into what is called a passive anti theft system--or PATS. PATS uses an electronically coded key that sends a signal to the vehicle. If the coded signal from the key doesn't match the one in the vehicle, the car won't start. This helps prevent someone from jumping in your unattended vehicle and trying to hot wire the car to steal it. No pass key--no start. The problem comes in when the passkey fails, as they sometimes do. When it fails, the car "thinks" that the anti-theft system has been activated and the car won't start. This also means that if you change the ignition lock cylinder yourself, since the key is coded to the lock, the car still won't start unless you have a dealer re-program the key. At this point you may have no choice but to have the car towed and the passkey re-set.
