Ignition CoilOne of the most critical systems of your car is the ignition system. Without proper ignition function, your car will start unpredictably or not at all – which is not a particularly good situation for any driver. There are few things more frustrating that not being sure whether or not your car is going to start when you want it to – so keeping a close eye on the health of your ignition system is critical for great function through and through. Your car’s ignition system begins with the battery, which provides the power to get the process started. The battery generally provides 12 volts of electricity, which is converted into thousands of volts by the ignition coil. This spark coil (or induction coil) is designed to convert low voltage from the battery into extremely high voltage – and it is this high voltage that kick-starts the spark plugs. The spark plugs, then, are responsible for igniting the mixture of fuel and air in the engine’s cylinder and beginning the process of internal combustion. To keep your ignition system in top condition, shop for great parts and components at PartsGeek.com, where you can have all your questions answered.

  • Delphi coils provide OE performance, durability and electromagnetic capacity level requirements
  • Delphi ignition coils are designed to operate as part of an integral engine management system to insert power into spark plugs and ensure fast starts; consistent engine performance and optimized fuel efficiency
  • Delphi uses winding process techniques to control the length of wire between adjacent windings; that's important since more length means greater voltage differences and can create more pressure that could break down the insulation and wire coating
  • We back our ignition coil design with proven materials, such as high quality wires and wire coating that resists the cracks, pin holes and imperfections that most often lead to failure issues

Ignition Coil

False starts, backfires and stalls: ignition systems problems are annoying at best. At worst, they're a threat to your safety and that of everyone else on the road with you. That's especially true of failed ignition coils, which overheat and cause your vehicle to stall out in the middle of a drive. If this sounds familiar, act fast. Replace your faulty coil and help preserve everyone's safety.

Ignition coils are dual-coiled electrical inductors that increase voltage coming from your battery. In some vehicles, this power is then split up by your distributor and sent out to your spark plugs to fire your engine pistons. Other designs have their coils mounted directly to the spark plugs. Coils provide enough electricity to generate the sparks needed to fire you cylinders. This function makes them necessary for your vehicle to operate.

Get back on the road with our selection of top ignition coil brands, like Denso, MSD, Motorcraft, Karlyn, Accel, Delphi, Spectra Premium, Beck Arnley, Bremi, Standard Motor Products, Bosch and AC Delco. We protect your purchases with a 30-day return policy. Order now: Our inventory system allows us to ship out in less than two days. We have millions of other parts and accessories too, all at exclusive PartsGeek.com discounts of up to 80% off the list price.

What is an ignition coil?

Your ignition coil increases the voltage coming from your battery. In distributor-based ignition systems, this increased power goes out to your distributor, and eventually to your spark plugs. In other designs, there are several smaller coils that service individual cylinders or pairs of cylinders. Either way, the purpose is to light up the fuel in your combustion chambers, moving your pistons and powering your vehicle.

The coil is actually two coils. Together, they act as a transformer. Current flows through the first coil, where it's turned on and off by a circuit breaker. This disruption causes a magnetic disturbance that charges the tightly wound second coil with much higher voltage.

To locate your ignition coil, first turn off the engine. Then, visually trace the wires back from your spark plugs. These wires should connect to your distributor cap. You should see a heavily insulated wire running from your distributor to your coil. Some modern engines have a rail or cassette system with coils that contact spark plugs directly. Look along your engine cylinders for a long strip with an electrical lead attached to one end.

How much are replacement ignition coils?

You might pay anywhere from $25 to $120 on average for a traditional design of ignition coil. Rail designs cost much more, sometimes well over $1,000. Prices depend on several factors:

  • Power output
  • Spark timing accuracy
  • Cassette versus high-voltage coil design
  • Efficiency
  • Noise reduction features

How do you tell if a coil is faulty?

Faults in ignition coils in distributor-type engines are sometimes a challenge to diagnose. That's because symptoms of a failed coil are similar to problems caused by failed distributors, spark plug lead wires or the spark plugs themselves.

Diagnosing Coil Problems

  1. Isolate the problem cylinders.
  2. Determine the coils that service those cylinders.
  3. If a coil services all of the bad cylinders, it could be the cause of any issues.

In addition, you might have advanced problems in your coil if certain things are happening with your engine:

  • Excessive wear on your spark plugs
  • Good starting and operation, but failure after some time on the road

Well, I have been using Standard Ignition components for 25 years, from dist. overhaul kits(remember them??)to all the DIS and Coil-over-Plug designs, and with the confidence that they will resolve the problem. Again, they have put my old truck on the road again, running like before, without the mis-fire and erratic Tachometer operation!!

Everything was great except the shipping rate seemed very high as compared to how fast it shipped. It wasn't a particularly large or heavy item (ignition coil) but took ~2 weeks to get at a shipping price ~$12.
