Hood Release HandleIn nearly every automotive repair, the first step is to access the interior of your carís hood. Beneath the hood, youíll find nearly everything that is responsible for making your car run smoothly and efficiently Ė from the engine to the cooling system to the transmission. One key element of every car, then, is the system that allows you to open the hood and access your carís inner mechanisms. Most cars have a hood release handle just inside the rim of the hood. Tripping a switch or lever inside the passenger cabin releases the beginning of the hood mechanism, and depressing this handle pulls on a hood release cable, allowing you to open the hood and access the interior. When something goes wrong with the hood release mechanism, it can be difficult to fix: how can you get inside the car to fix the broken component if you canít get the hood open because the component is broken? The key is to find a way to convince the hood to open without damaging additional components Ė and you may want to look to a professional for this task. When it comes to purchasing the parts you need to repair your hood opening mechanism, remember that offers a great selection and great service.

What Is a Hood Release Handle?

Whenever there is a big problem with your engine, the first step is to open the hood to check things out. If the hood release handle, which opens the hood and is like the engine’s front door, is broken fixing the real problem becomes considerably more complicated than necessary. Typically, when you open the hood, you reach towards the driver-side door, under the steering wheel and look for the hood release handle, which is often a lever that attaches to a cord. When you pull on the hood handle, the cord pulls the device holding the hood down out of place, which allows the hood to pop up. In theory, a broken hood release handle isn’t the worst thing in the world, but if you have a problem with your engine or you need access under the hood to add more oil, etc., fixing this is step one in solving whatever else is going on with your vehicle.

How Much Are New Hood Handles?

As frustrating as having your hood release handle break can be, the good news is that the majority of replacements cost less than $20. Prices vary depending upon the year, make and model of your car and the brand you purchase. It is important to purchase a hood handle that is compatible with your vehicle because all hood release mechanisms are not set up in the same manner. At we offer a huge selection of hood handles for a wide variety of cars to ensure you find the right part at the right price.

Is It Difficult to Replace a Hood Release Handle?

Fixing your hood release handle is not a difficult task, and can be accomplished with a socket wrench and screwdrivers. Remove the panel near the driver’s side door that surrounds your hood release handle. Your hood release cable is held in by two bolts, which need to be removed. To detach your handle use a screwdriver to pry it off the end of the cable. Then attach the new handle in its place. You’ll replace the bolts that held your hood release handle into place. Test it to make sure it’s working, and then reattach the panel. You’re ready to ride again.

This hood release seems to be made of a medium grade plastic. Not super strong, but not terribly weak, either. Perhaps slightly under par with the original. I expect to get 4~5 years out of it, and then an harried mechanic (probably me) will break it again.
