Heater ValveThe first hint of a problem with your car's heater valve may be that no heat is coming from the heater in the passenger compartment. Or, it may be that so much heat is coming out that you have to drive with the windows open because you can't turn it off. A car's heater valve regulates the heat that comes from the heater. The heater is operated by a switch of some sort that is mounted on the dashboard and that directly controls the heater valve. The valve is located somewhere on the backside of the engine, and regulates the mix of hot water and antifreeze coming from the radiator and flowing though the heater core -- which produces the heat that you feel inside the car. If you can't turn on the heat or make it stop, or if you notice a strong smell of antifreeze within the car coupled with a reduction in the amount of coolant in your radiator, most likely you will need to have the heater valve replaced. Once the valve fails, it either loses the coolant through leaking before it can reach the heater--and so produces no heat--or it produces heat all the time because it's no longer blocking the flow of the heat producing coolant. If you're going to try to replace the heater valve yourself, you should know that there are two kinds of valves--2 port and 4 port--and you can tell which yours is by counting the number of hoses running from the valve. When replacing the valve, you will need to drain the coolant, replace the valve and refill the car with coolant. The hardest part may be that often the heater valve is located behind the dashboard and difficult to get to. In this case, you may want to take the car to a mechanic for the repair.

Heater Valve

On a bitterly cold morning when you venture outside to warm up your car, the last thing you need is a broken heater. It's just as uncomfortable if you're driving in temperate weather and your heater won't stop pumping out hot air. When your car's heater starts acting up it's likely due to a broken heater valve. There are other telltale signs that this part isn't working properly and needs to be replaced. Perhaps you smell a sweet odor that resembles pancakes or maple syrup. That's what antifreeze smells like, and this coolant smell is often present when there's a valve that needs replacing. You need your heater to work consistently in cold temperatures, and in order for it do so, your heater valve needs to be in top working condition. Luckily the experts at PartsGeek.com have you covered with a wide selection of parts.

PartsGeek.com is the right place to find a replacement valve for your car. We have heater control valves from leading brands like Bosch, Febi, Meyle, Genuine, Mopar, Four Seasons and APA/URO Parts. Plus, our 30-day return policy makes it easy for you to send back a part if you order the wrong one or change your mind.

What is a heater valve?

The cost of a heater control valve varies widely depending on the make and model as well as the age of your vehicle. An older vehicle may have a valve that runs between $20-$50, while more modern and costlier cars have valves that can cost upwards of $500 or more. On average, you can expect to pay between $65-$130 for many vehicles.

How can I tell when my heater control valve needs replacement?

One of the first and most obvious signs of a faulty valve is when your car no longer produces hot air to heat your vehicle. Sometimes when there's a broken valve, your car will begin to leak antifreeze. You can see a coolant leak just like you would with an oil leak, because your car will leave a pool of antifreeze on the ground while it's parked. The reason coolant leaks when a heater control valve needs replacement is because the valve may have become corroded from coming into contact with contaminated or old fluid, or, it may have simply become worn and cracked from age. Another sign is when your car's temperature gauge Your vehicle owner's manual can tell you when you should replace your car's valve in order to keep it running at peak performance.
