Exhaust Manifold GasketThe exhaust manifold gasket performs a similar role to the intake manifold gasket, except it's located on the other side of the engine. Made of similar material to the intake manifold gasket, the exhaust manifold gasket prevents gas from leaking from the cylinders into the exhaust manifold. While leakage in this gasket will waste fuel and can eventually lead to serious problems, a leak is not characterized by decreased performance. The exhaust manifold gasket is situated between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder heads. It prevents fuel from entering the exhaust manifold, only allowing air to pass through. If an exhaust manifold gasket is leaking, you may hear a ticking or tapping noise coming from the engine while it is relatively cool. Once the engine warms up beyond a certain point, the noise usually stops, making the problem more difficult to detect. An exhaust leak elsewhere in the system can manifest the same symptoms as a leaky exhaust manifold gasket, so the entire exhaust system must be checked to ensure integrity. When replacing an exhaust manifold gasket, the entire exhaust manifold must be removed. This area gets extremely hot, so repairs should wait until the vehicle has had several hours to cool. The area where the gasket seals to the exhaust manifold can become warped due to the heat. In these cases, you will either need to press the manifold in a machine shop or replace it entirely. Also, the bolts and studs that hold the manifold in place can break down due to the heat. It's usually a good idea to replace these whenever you're replacing an exhaust manifold gasket. Though an exhaust manifold gasket would seem to be less vital than some parts, a leaking gasket must be replaced relatively quickly to avoid further fuel mixture problems.

What Is an Exhaust Manifold Gasket?

The exhaust manifold gasket seals the exhaust manifold to the corresponding cylinder, ensuring that only air and gases pass through into the exhaust system. This is an important job because if liquid fuel were to leak into the system, it could throw off your fuel mixture, both decreasing your fuel economy and contributing to increased air pollution. On the other hand, if combustion emissions, including carbon monoxide, were leaking out of the cylinders through a damaged gasket instead of passing through the manifold to the catalytic converter, you could have a serious health hazard on your hands.

How Much Does a New Exhaust Manifold Gasket Cost?

That depends on the make and model of your vehicle and the brand of gasket you decide to buy. At PartsGeek.com, our exhaust manifold gaskets range in price from less than $10 to around $50.

What Is an Exhaust Manifold Leak?

A leak in your vehicle’s exhaust system can create an unsafe environment in the passenger area because one of the byproducts of a combustion engine is carbon monoxide. Although a leak can potentially occur at any point in the system, the manifold is a good first place to check. Sometimes an exhaust leak is caused by exhaust manifold gaskets that fail to seal properly, allowing fumes to escape before they have made their way through the catalytic converter.

What Are the Symptoms of Exhaust Manifold Gasket Failure?

The symptoms of a leaky exhaust manifold gasket are similar to those of other exhaust system leaks. For example, if you notice that your engine is sputtering or simply making a lot more noise than usual, it may be an exhaust leak. Such a leak probably also causes noticeable fumes in the passenger area. It’s important to identify and repair any sort of exhaust leak as soon as you can so you can avoid breathing in potentially deadly carbon monoxide and other fumes.

This gasket works great! Because the rotor housings are not as available in front and rear anymore for 12a's, I welded material to my RB header and cut the gasket in half to cover the emission ports. You could weld the ports shut in the rotor housing but that is more time consuming and risky. This gasket looks exactly like a factory original and works the same.
