Engine MountWhen it comes to the overall health and function of your car, itís clear that the engine itself is critical. The engine is quite literally the heart, soul, and overall lifeblood of a car or truck Ė so itís critical that you treat it well. One thing to keep in mind is that an engine is only as good as its surroundings Ė which in many cases means that an engine is only as good as its engine mount. While rather unglamorous, the mount is what keeps the engine in place and supports its vital processes Ė so itís critical that you monitor its health and well-being. One area to keep an eye on are the rubber components. Many of the mountís metal components are joined by rubber pieces. These rubber seals are subject to cracking and disintegration. Oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid can leak onto the rubber casings, causing the entire piece to suffer more noticeably. If you want to keep good tabs on the health of your internal combustion engine, then, check out the great service available at PartsGeek.com.

What is an engine mount/motor mount?

Engine mounts, also known as motor mounts, are small auto parts designed to keep your engine stabilized and properly aligned. They are typically made of metal and rubber. Steel is used to provide stability under the great force and torque created by the engine, while rubber helps to absorb and dampen vibrations.

How much do motor mounts cost?

The price of engine mounts varies widely by manufacturer and level of performance. Most of the motor mounts available on PriceGeek.com fall between $20 and $200. Cost will also depend on the make and model of your vehicle, and whether you are looking for an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) part or one that is OE-Equivalent.

What can go wrong with motor mounts?

Given that engines produce so much power, it's not surprising that it tends to be pretty noticeable when one or more of the motor mounts is starting to give out.

Intense, excessive vibration of the front of your car could be a sign that the rubber used to dampen it is beginning to wear or crack. Left unchecked, this can worsen until the entire vehicle starts to shake while the engine is running. This can not only be uncomfortable for passengers, it can actually reduce overall engine efficiency.

Impact noises that can be heard coming from the engine bay may be caused by severe wear, or it may be evidence of one or more broken engine mounts. At this point the motor may be shifting around during operation, which could lead to damage to surrounding parts, or worse, to the engine itself.

Steps to replace motor mounts?

To replace worn or broken mounts, follow these steps:

  1. Assess the clearance between the engine and the firewall. Make sure this space is clear of radiator hoses, distributor caps or AC lines that may be damaged or crimped while lifting out the engine.
  2. Making sure to use a wood brace against the oil pan, secure the engine on a jack. Never put the jack directly against the oil pan, since the weight of the engine can cause the pan to dent.
  3. Loosen the engine mount bolts.
  4. Get beneath the vehicle and loosen the bolts that secure the mount to the frame of the car.
  5. Carefully jack up the engine and remove the motor mount you need to replace. Compare the new to the old, and transfer any drip pans.
  6. To make alignment easier, tread the mount-to-frame bolts before you begin the lower the engine.
  7. Lower the engine in place and tighten up all bolts.
