Camshaft Position SensorWhen it comes to your car or truck's camshaft, timing is everything. This important device controls the opening and closing of exhaust valves. As a result, the cams are responsible for delivering the mixture of air and exhaust gases. Too much air results in wasted fuel, while too little air results in reduced power. To ensure the engine keeps running on al cylinders, auto manufacturers now use something called a camshaft position sensor. This little device electronically collects real-time data about the shaft's speed, acceleration, deceleration and position and sends it to the engine computer. This is done through either a magnetic or hall effect sensor. Based on the results, the computer adjusts fuel/air mixture amounts, ignition timing and other factors. The result is a vehicle that delivers maximum performance and fuel efficiency at all speeds and torques. This component can become damaged over time. If this is the case, it should be replaced immediately to regain engine health. For all of your auto parts needs, choose PartsGeek.com for affordable prices and fast shipping.

camshaft position sensor

Over the past several decades the auto industry has made huge strides in efficiency, performance and safety by using emerging digital technologies. Cam sensors are a perfect example. These innovative devices help to monitor and regulate the operation of your camshaft configuration, and are a crucial component of most modern vehicles. A failing sensor can result in poor engine performance, or worse, complete engine failure. If you think your sensor is having issues, make sure to replace it as soon as possible!

At PartsGeek.com you'll find thousands of top quality camshafts from manufacturers like Delphi, Bosch, Standard Motor and more, as well as plenty of OEM parts. We take pride in our exceptional selection, quick delivery and friendly customer service. Additionally, we have a 30-day return policy, so that you can be sure that you get the product that fits your needs.

What is a camshaft position sensor?

The camshaft is a crucial component of your engine's intake and exhaust system. Extending along each cylinder bank, this metal rod is fitted with alternating lobes, or knuckles. As the camshaft rotates, the lobes press against inlet and output valves, feeding the engine aerated fuel and exhausting waste.

Modern autos are equipped with simple electronic devices, called camshaft position sensors, that make sure that the engine continues to run on all cylinders. This innovative piece of equipment continuously monitors data in real time about the performance of the camshaft: how fast it's moving, accelerating, decelerating and its position. This information is then fed to the engine control module (EMC).

How much does a camshaft position sensor cost?

The price of a new position sensor will vary according to your vehicle make and model, the manufacturer of the part. Certain sensors may also come with features such as unique mounting designs, high temperature range capabilities and material durability. Most of the cam sensors you'll find on PartsGeek.com cost between $20 and $100.

What do cam sensors monitor?

The sensor itself communicates with the engine control module. This is the device actually responsible for interpreting data from the sensor in order to make operation adjustments. Examples include: regulating fuel intake amount, ensuring full exhaust of waste and timing ignition as well as other functions so that the engine can deliver its peak performance. This automation makes it much easier for today's cars to achieve good fuel efficiency and power at varying speeds and torques.

What are the symptoms of a faulty camshaft position sensor?

As with most parts, cam sensors are prone to wear out over time or may be damaged by an unexpected accident. The first sign of a bad sensor is often the check engine light, which is a general signal that something somewhere in the engine is wrong. If it is your sensor, the error codes on your engine control module should help you to diagnose the problem.

A faulty sensor usually leads to poor overall driving performance. Slow acceleration, sudden drops in engine power, frequent stalling, rough idling and reduced fuel efficiency could all be results of a cam sensor failure.
