Back Up LightAs drivers, we rely on a variety of visual cues to anticipate the movement of cars and trucks around us. Turn signals, brake lights and headlights are all important safety features that warn other drivers of our movements and allow us to avoid accidents. Another such visual cue is the back up light. Located on the rear of the vehicle, this auto part typically comes in a pair of lights that is situated below or near the rear taillights. They are usually white in color, as opposed to red taillights. The sole purpose of this component is to inform other drivers that you are driving in reverse. Unlike turn signals and headlights, the back up light cannot be manually turned on. The lights come on automatically when the vehicle is placed in the reverse gear. Obviously, this vehicle feature can be highly beneficial, especially in parking lots. Understanding a driver's intentions prior to the action being taken has helped save countless drivers from an unwanted fender bender. From electrical components to engine parts and accessories, PartsGeek.com is your source for affordable auto parts.

Backup Light

Have you taken notice of the tiny white lights on the back of your car? If you are often stuck in traffic, you are probably quite familiar with the image of brake lights. However, there is another set of little lights on the back of your car that clearly indicate when you are backing up. While they often go unnoticed, backup lights are an essential part of daily life, as they quickly and subtly alert others that a vehicle is backing up. Because they are so small, it may be easy to forget about them, but regular checks and replacement are essential to staying safe on the road.

PartsGeek.com offers an extensive selection of light replacements from manufacturers like OEM, ULO and Action Crash. You can find both bulb and lens pieces to ensure that your lighting system is fully functioning. Our easy to navigate fit guide, personable assistance and 30-day return policy can help you find just the part you are looking for.

What Is a Backup Light?

Backup lights, also known as reverse lights, are small lights typically placed under your brake lights to indicate you are preparing to back up. They serve as a warning sign to other cars and pedestrians that you have placed your car into reverse. They automatically light up when you shift your vehicle into the reverse position.

How Much Are Backup Lights?

Backup lamps are available for approximately $15 to $115 on PartsGeek.com, and there is a range of factors that contribute to the cost of a replacement part. When purchasing a new light, you need to consider the following.

  • The make and model of your car
  • The age of your vehicle
  • The position of the light
  • The Light design

The type of replacement will also largely depend on the extent of damage and the type of design. In some cases, you may be able to simply replace a bulb. In others, you may need to replace the entire piece.

Is Backup Lighting Mandatory?

On a day-to-day basis, you likely give little thought to the lighting on the rear of your car, but it is important to understand that law requires that you have some form of backup lighting. The laws are fairly simple. All vehicles must have at least one working backup lamp that works only when the car is in reverse. Backup lamps also need to be white to contrast with braking illumination. Specific regulations and penalties vary by state.

How Do You Replace Backup Lights?

Because law requires reverse lighting, regular checks for functioning are essential to prevent being pulled over and fined. You can easily check the brakes on your own by placing your ignition to “on” without starting the car. You then need to place the car in reverse while leaving the parking brake on. Ensure that your car is clearly stationary, and then check to see if your lights are illuminated. If they are not, you need to replace them. In order to replace your bulbs complete the following steps.

  • Find the appropriate replacement
  • Review your owner manual regarding how to access the affected bulb.
  • Remove the lens cover and unscrew bulb
  • In the case of trunk access remove the bulb through its socket.
  • Check the socket for damage or corrosion
  • Screw the bulb into the socket
  • Replace covers
  • Test to see if lights are functioning properly

I bought a tail light from these guys bc it was the cheapest. Got the light n the mail and it was thrown in a box and shipped w no paper, bubble wrap or anything to protect it, not to mention no invoice! I would just think such a big company could at least try to protect there products when shipping across country... But I will say for the distance it traveled it was delivered quickly... Just in a tattered cardboard box, but its all good. - Really???

It turns out that this product is the light BULB, not the Back Up Light assembly. There is no picture, so it was somewhat confusing because the description says "Back Up Light" not "Light Bulb". - 1995 Toyota 4Runner AC Delco Back Up Light

Both back up lenses were broken on my old 95 Volvo 940 wagon. I was pleasantly surprised that the replacement lenses from Parts Geek were identical to the originals; they even had the Volvo logo. They would have fit perfectly except that I got lazy and failed to remove the rock-hard old adhesive. Instead of following the instructions, I simply cleaned the area, ran a bead of silicone over the old adhesive, pushed the new lenses into place, and waited 24 hours before driving. Success! They look great, and only I will notice that they protrude slightly from the other lenses. This company has great products and service; I am ordering another lens today. - TM--Seattle
