Replacement Air Spring Information

Choose from top brands including: Arnott, Westar, Bilstein, A1 Cardone, Genuine, Dunlop and OEM.

In some vehicles today, the suspension system utilizes air as opposed to fluid or steel springs or struts. The suspension is powered by an electric or engine driven air pump. This compressor pressurizes the air and then uses the compressed gas as a kind of spring. Air suspension is so effective that it is often used in place of steel springs in the heaviest vehicle applications. The pneumatic spring can be found in busses and heavy trucks, as well as some passenger vehicles.

Because the air suspension requires constant re-pressurization, when the vehicle is left off for a period of time, the springs can settle, resulting in a sudden upward motion when the engine is started again and the pneumatic bags inflate. The chassis then is elevated from the axle as the air bellows fills. While you may see or read the term air bellows or air bag, the proper term for the component is air spring. On occasion the most difficult element about fixing your vehicle is the need to find a good source for quality parts. When you decided on your car, you committed to a decision that might be in your life for a long run; guard that decision with top-notch parts and accessories. A car is really only as good as the parts it uses, and so the team of specialists here at PartsGeek is excited to help you find the best OEM and aftermarket parts for any purpose.

Air Spring

The final word in smooth-riding suspensions is air. Air springs are superior in many ways to their hydraulic and metal counterparts. They provide more stability, better load capacity and just a better ride in general. Get an upgrade here, or get your air ride system back up to its potential.

Your air spring uses a motor to maintain the pressure it needs to support your vehicle's weight and absorb shocks. The mechanical effect is the same as other types of springs, in that impact is absorbed into the spring apparatus. One notable difference is that, since these types of springs need to be pumped actively, they might settle naturally if you don't drive for a while.

When you need air springs, think PartsGeek.com. We stock millions of parts at great prices, so look for everything you need to complete your suspension work right here. We have springs from top brands like A1 Cardone, Bilstein, Arnott, Dunlop, Genuine and Westar. Don't worry if you don't end up using one of the parts you order. We have a 30-day return policy to cover your purchases, so buy everything you think you'll need to get the job done.

What is an air spring?

Your air springs are known by several names:

  • Pneumatic air cylinders
  • Air bag
  • Air bellows

Unfortunately, this causes some confusion at times due to the fact that they share a name with the collision-triggered occupant restraint safety systems that are also known as airbags.

Air springs use a motor-driven pump to create pressurized air inside a controlled chamber. These springs work so well that they're often used in the suspensions of heavy-duty automobile applications to provide superior stability for cargo. They're also common in luxury vehicles due to their ability to deliver smooth rides.

The primary function of the air springs in your suspension system is to raise the chassis up off of the axles and keep it there. A secondary benefit is that they can be adjusted relatively easy to offer different ride heights.

How much is an air spring?

You might end up spending more on new air springs than it looks like at first. That's because it's often recommended to replace multiple springs at a time. All in all, the parts you need to replace your springs might cost anywhere from $150-1500. There are several reasons for this huge price variance:

  • Design of the springs
  • Load capacity
  • Computer control elements
  • Pump capacity and design
  • Materials used

When should you replace air springs?

There are two reasons to install air springs. The first is fi you're upgrading your suspension system. This is a major job, but the smooth ride that these springs offer has a lot of advantages over other applications.

The second reason is if your current air springs are aging or damaged. One of the main symptoms of a decrepit spring is a reduction in ride comfort. If you feel more road vibration and harsher shocks from impacting surface imperfections, check out your air springs. Look for cracks or leaks in the rubber. If you can't find anything with a visual inspection, try a more advanced method.

Checking for Small Leaks with Soapy Water

  1. Mix one quart of water and one tablespoon of mild dish soap.
  2. Place the solution in a spray bottle with a fine mist setting.
  3. Mist the joints and the spring bag.
  4. Observe for any bubbling that occurs.
  5. Mark the bubbling leaks with chalk or a similar substance. Stay away from solvent-based markers that may speed the deterioration of natural rubber.
