Vehicle emissions have become a hotly debated topic in recent years. As we come to understand the ramifications of global warming and other factors, more and more interest has been placed on vehicle emissions. Many countries have laws that regulate the amount of pollutants a vehicle can cough out over a period of time. To help reduce the amount of exhaust emissions, the vast majority of cars manufactured these days feature an air pump. This component plays an integral role in your car by reducing the amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide that exits out the combustion chamber. This is done by pumping oxygen into the exhaust system. The oxygen mingles with the contaminants inside the catalytic converter, resulting in a re-burning process that vaporizes much of the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The air pump is especially helpful in reducing airborne pollutants while the engine is still warming up. A faulty component may result in your vehicle not passing emissions testing. Air Pump
Do you want to save the environment? Well, regardless of your answer, chances are that you need an air pump to conform to the emissions standards set by your local governing body. Many jurisdictions require drivers to take their vehicles in for annual testing at certified emissions centers. This is part of an effort to make sure that noxious fumes are kept to a minimum. Smog pumps are necessary to pass these tests, because they reduce dangerous emissions by supplying the clean air necessary to burn exhaust.
Your air pump is a low-pressure and high-volume apparatus that cycles clean air back into your emissions control system, usually using a rotary pump design. It's driven by a belt, requiring somewhere between 2-4 horsepower to operate. The air is controlled further via a system of valves before it's introduced into your catalytic converter. It's then used to burn up the gasses that weren't used up during primary combustion.
We have a variety of new and refurbished smog pumps at PartsGeek.com to fit nearly any vehicle. We carry almost all of the top pump manufacturers, like A1 Cardone, APA URO parts, Hella, C&M Hydraulics, Genuine, Pierburg, AC Delco, Dorman, Vemo and Standard Motor Products. We're so sure you are going to get what you need, we offer a 30-day refund and return policy to cover your purchases. Another thing to remember is that, with parts like smog pumps, you might be able to take advantage of the core rebate program. That's because PartsGeek.com has deals with the best refurbishing companies to get you great prices on your broken parts. Check it out when you're making your purchase.
What is an air pump?
Your air pump is responsible for circulating fresh air back into the exhaust to support the function of the emissions reduction system. It uses belt-driven pumping technology to deliver this oxygen-rich air from the air filtration housing to the catalytic converter via a sophisticated series of safety valves.
In some vehicles, the secondary air injection pump also serves to control the temperature of your catalytic converter. This allows for proper function even when the engine is still warming up. Overall, the air pump is a critical component of your emissions system, and you need it to pass visual inspections in some jurisdictions.
How much is an air pump?
New smog pumps might cost you somewhere between $150-300, but there's good news. Try saving money on these parts by going with a high-quality refurbished or rebuilt option. If you go this route, you might expect to pay as little as half the price of a new part. Seeing as some of the higher end pumps cost nearly $1,000, this is a huge money saver.
Why do you need an air pump?
There’s significant debate as to the benefits of these parts. The short answer is that you need the smog pump because it's the law and because it reduces the emission of smog-causing gasses. These parts are the only way that most vehicles are able to conform to government-mandated vehicle emissions standards. There are certain exceptions, such as electric vehicles, but the general rule is that you need a working secondary air injection system to be road legal.
