Have you ever wondered how your vehicle's air conditioning system creates ice-cold temperatures from hot summer air? A car or truck's AC system is highly technical and requires several different components to deliver reliably cold temperatures. At the center of it all is the AC evaporator. This hunk of metal and coils is located inside the heater case and can not be seen simply by popping the hood of your car. As Freon passes through this vital component, it causes the coils to become very cold. A nearby blower fan pulls the cold air dissipating of the evaporator and pushes it into the air vents of the car or truck. From here, the air enters the cabin, greeting you with a welcoming cool breeze. If you've ever wondered why water drips from your engine when you blast the air conditioning, it's due to this part of the system. The cooling effect causes condensation to form on the exterior of the evaporator. Eventually, this condensation drips and falls to the ground on the passenger side of the vehicle. Few things are more refreshing than blasting your vehicle’s air conditioning on a scorching summer afternoon. The truth is that your AC system is highly technical and requires specific components to be able to constantly produce cool, crisp temperatures. The component that is at the core of all of this cooling is the AC evaporator. Refrigerant passes through tubes in the evaporator, creating the cold breeze that you feel coming through your vents. When it comes time to replace your evaporator, you want to make sure you’re getting a high-quality product from a trusted brand name.
At PartsGeek.com, we offer a huge selection from top brands like Nissens, ACM, Spectra Premium, Behr, UAC, GDP, Denso, Four Seasons, TYC, AC Delco, Valeo, Mopar and Motorcraft. Whether you are looking for new, performance, OEM, refurbished or discounted AC evaporator parts, we have what you need. See our selection below.
What is the AC evaporator?
The AC evaporator is one of the central components in a vehicle’s AC system. It is made out of metal (aluminum) and is similar to a radiator, only smaller in size and a bit thicker. The evaporator has a series of internal tubes and fins where warm air can pass freely through. The tubes carry refrigerant that then absorbs the warm air surrounding the evaporator. From there, the refrigerant then moves on to the compressor. Any humidity in the air condenses onto the surface of the evaporator and then drips out of a drain tube underneath the vehicle. If you’ve ever seen water dropping from your engine on a hot day after blasting your AC unit, you now know why.
Where is the AC evaporator?
The air conditioning evaporator, unlike other AC components, is not easily accessible from popping the hood on your vehicle. Most of the time, it is located inside the heater case inside the passenger compartment, buried deep under the instrument panel. Some larger vehicles, like SUVs and vans, have two evaporators with one under the instrument panel and another near the back of the vehicle. This rear evaporator could be either in the ceiling or in a side panel.
How much does an AC evaporator cost?
Even though evaporators are one of the six crucial components of your vehicle’s AC system, they are surprisingly affordable. Here at PartsGeek.com, most fall within the $50 range. We are also unique in that we offer a 30-day return policy to help ensure that you get the right part at the right price range.
What could go wrong with your vehicle’s evaporator?
Most of the time, AC evaporators that go bad are the victims of leakage. This can happen due to a couple of different reasons:
- A leak point is created by either a weld or a seam that has gone bad
- Corrosion has caused an “outside-in” failure because leaves and organic material have entered the evaporator’s case and contacted the surface
Either way, once the evaporator has failed it will need to be replaced. It is important to note that evaporators can be somewhat time consuming to replace and may require special tools, so make sure you have the proper help on hand.
