Jaguar XK

The Jaguar XK was manufactured and sold between 1996 and 2014. A two-seater grand tourer, trims included the XK proper, the XK8 and the XKR. The XK8 was the first model to come off the assembly line. It was the first 8 cylinder Jag since the 1960s, and was powered by the AJ V8.

The initial XK8 model was designed as a replacement for the XJ-S, and was available as a hard top, two door coupe and as a sport roadster with convertible top. The AJ-8 featured dual overhead cams, and was available in several different sizes, ranging from 3.2 to 5.0 liters. In addition to several Jaguar models, the AJ-8 is also installed in a number of Land Rovers as well as the Lincoln LS and the Ford Thunderbird. Originally, this engine used a an alloy of nickel and silicon to coat the piston walls, but due to low quality gasoline with high sulfur content, there was a reaction that caused catastrophic engine failure. Since then, Jaguar has returned to the use of cast iron for the cylinders. This engine, which was available with an optional turbocharger, had a variable valve timing system that adjusts the timing of valve lift in order to maximize fuel economy and reduce emissions.

In 2006, the XK series underwent some modifications of the coachwork, employing an aluminum monocoque construction in order to same weight and increase body strength. The second generation of XK Jaguars featured a front grill that was a tribute to the 1961 E-Type sports car. Performance was upgraded from 370 to 410 horsepower (up to 510 with turbocharger). This upgrade could propel the vehicle from zero to 60 in just over 4 seconds, giving it a top speed of 186 miles per hour - the fastest Jaguar since the futuristic supercar, the Jaguar XJ220 (of which only 271 were built in the early 1990s).

The XK engine was mated to a six speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, giving the driver the option of controlling the gears manually. It also featured adaptive suspension as well as a rearview camera and heated, leather upholstered seats. Other high-tech features included Bluetooth connectivity, and a deluxe Bowers & Wilkins stereo system with USB and iPod interface.

Production of the XK was discontinued during the summer of 2014. The most recent models started out at $84,500 for the base trim. Weighing in at over two tons, this car still managed to pull 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

Repairs and maintenance on the Jaguar XK needs a bit of expertise, due to its technological sophistication - as well as a reliable source of parts and accessories.
