2002 Jaguar X Type

Jaguar X Type

The Jaguar X-Type was introduced in October of 2001 as an "executive compact." It was the first such vehicle manufactured by the company in 52 years. Built in Liverpool, U.K. at a time when Jaguar Motors was part of the Ford Motor Compay, the X-Type was based on a platform shared with the Contour as well as the Mercury Cougar and the Mystique. It was the smallest Jaguar model, available in both sedan and station wagon configurations. Production was discontinued in 2009.

The first Jaguar X-Type vehicles were available with all-wheel drive. Customers could choose between a 2.5 liter or 3.0 liter AJ-V6 gasoline engine. These engines employed variable valve timing, with a fuel injection system that used four valves for each cylinder. Other noteworthy features of the AJ engine were the one-piece cast camshaft and fracture-split forged, powder metal connecting rods.

In 2002, Jaguar came out with a front-wheel drive option, equipped with a 2.1 liter V6. All models were equipped with manual or automatic five-speed transmissions. A four cylinder diesel engine was made available the following year, along with a six-speed transmission known as the "Jaguar Sequential Shift." The "Sportwagon" variant was introduced in 2004. That same year, Jaguar brought out the "Spirit Limited," which included spoilers and a rear valance. The following year, Jaguar produced the XS Limited Edition that offered additional engine choices.

The Jaguar X-Type received good ratings for safety across the board by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicle achieved four stars in all crash tests, including side impacts and rollover. Jaguar aficionados were not entirely pleased with the fact that their car shared a platform with a Ford model. Although it was Jaguar's best-selling model, it continued to lose ground to competing models from Germany, such as the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes S-Class. Part of the problem was the dearth of choices; for the first few years, the only engine option was the gas-gulping V6 gasoline motor, where as the competition offered more economical four-cylinder options. Ultimately, a review in Time magazine was published in September 2007, listing the Jaguar X-Type as one of the "50 Worst Cars of All Time" - primarily because of its use of Ford components, with did not sit well with hard-core Jaguar fans. Other vehicle reviews ranged from "Average" to "Good." Basically, the Jaguar X-Series was unable to compete with its German-built counterparts - and this ultimately lead to its demise.

Consumers have reported a number of problems with the Jaguar X Type. Transmission failure is common, as are engine oil pan leaks. The latter is a relatively minor fix, easily corrected with Jaguar X Type aftermarket parts. However, other serious problems related to the cooling system and other issues have been reported, including premature deterioration of the interior, well before the odometer hits 100,000 miles.
