BMW X5

The BMW X5 is a mid-sized SUV that offers versatility, both off-road and on the highway. The X5, which first came out in 1999, is based on the BMW 5 Series of luxury sedans. Although BMWs are expensive - both to purchase and to repair - the good news is that, with proper maintenance, you won't have to spend much on those repairs. BMW vehicles are representative of legendary German engineering. You'll spend a few nickels to acquire a "Beemer," but if it's taken care of, it will provide years of trouble-free service.

The first generation BMW X5 was manufactured during a time that the German automaker controlled the British Land Rover company (now part of TATA Motors in India). Not surprisingly, those first generation BMWs contained some of the more advanced technology of its British counterpart - specifically, the innovative Hill Descent and Off Road Management systems as well as numerous electronic components, including the on-board computer and extensive entertainment system. The first generation BMW X5 offered numerous engine options as well, including gasoline inline sixes and V-8s and a diesel-powered model.

In 2006, BMW introduced the E70, its second generation mid-sized SUV. The BMW iDrive system was offered as standard equipment. Options included third row seating, allowing up to seven occupants to travel in comfort. A diesel option became available in North America in 2009. That same year, BMW began introducing a high-performance model to dealer showrooms for 2010. That year's model featured the new M Power V8 Turbo, providing 555 horsepower as well as M Dynamic Performance Control. The result was a high-powered vehicle with exceptional handling. By 2011, the E70 offered a number of turbocharged engines and an 8 speed automatic transmission. Not surprisingly, the BMW X5 was the company's best-selling model that year.

The current generation, introduced in 2013, offers three engine options. The most popular is a gasoline-powered, 450 HP V8. BMW X5 diesel versions with turbocharged inline-six engines were also made available. BMW also offers the X5 M, a high-performance version of the standard model. Its massive 4.4 liter V8 offers TwinPower and Valvetronic technology, delivering a whopping 575 HP. It is capable of going from 0 to 60 in four seconds. In April 2015, BMW also brought out the X5 xDrive40e, a plug-in hybrid variant that gets around 60 miles per gallon (compared to around 28 MPG for the gasoline-powered model).

The typical BMW X5 review is highly favorable; Car and Driver and Edmunds both rate the vehicle at over 4 out of 5 stars, while Kelly Blue Book gives it 8 out of 10. Of course, none of this comes cheap: purchasing a BMW X5 for sale represents a considerable investment, and BMW X5 parts and accessories usually don't come cheap. In order to get the most out of your vehicle, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule religiously. BMW auto parts can be expensive, but thanks to an online BMW X5 parts catalog such is available at PartsGeek.com, it's possible to get the components you need at a discount.
