Dodge Sprinter 2500

The Dodge Sprinter 2500 - also known as the Freightliner 2500 - is actually a Mercedes-Benz product, manufactured in the U.S. under license. It was first made available to the U.S. market under that name since 2003; North American production ended in 2006. Dodge made the move in order to replace the obsolete Dodge Ram van, which had continued rolling off the assembly lines, virtually unchanged, for thirty years. In order to avoid import taxes, the freight version was manufactured in Germany, disassembled, then shipped to the U.S. where it was reassembled. Passenger vans were imported as finished vehicles, since they were not subject to those taxes.

Four different engines were offered with the Dodge Sprinter 2500. Two of them were inline, four cylinder models: the Mercedes OM 601 and the M 111, the latter having dual overhead cams. There were also a pair of OM 601 inline five-cylinder models, which had greater displacement and therefore offered a bit more power. These were paired with either a manual or an automatic transmission.

Most of the Sprinters sold in the U.S. and Canada are used to haul cargo. There is certainly room to spare; with over 13 feet of cargo space, the Sprinter is able to haul up to 3000 pounds. In some communities, they are also being employed as ambulances. One of the more interesting items listed in a Dodge Sprinter parts catalog are conversion kits. These kits allow the owner to turn their Sprinter into a passenger van, a recreational vehicle, a limousine and other configurations. Some are even used as refrigeration trucks, and a few television stations use them as production vehicles.

While the Sprinter definitely has advantages over competing model in terms of passenger comfort and cargo capacity, it leaves something to be desired in the power department. All the available engines for the first generation of this vehicle are under-powered, which limits the vehicle's towing capacity. More recent models have addressed this issue, offering a 3.5 liter V6 gasoline engine that puts out 254 horses, though you won't find these in Sprinters built after 2009.

Standard features include a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, automatic climate control, anti-lock brakes and stability control. For a few hundred dollars extra, a customer can have rear parking assist, heated seats, a sun roof and a system for integrating a smart phone.

There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a Dodge Sprinter 2500 for sale. For a vehicle built by Mercedes-Benz, the Sprinter has had a great many issues. The Sprinter has even been subject to recalls over faulty intake manifolds, crankshaft position sensors and even air bags that rupture when they inflate. These recalls did not affect all model years, but you'll want to do a bit of research when considering the purchase of a Dodge Sprinter.
