Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna was introduced in 1997. It is a minivan manufactured in North America at a Toyota assembly facility located in Indiana. When first introduced, the Sienna was a front wheel drive replacement for the Toyota Previa, a short-lived model of minivan which had failed to win a significant share of the minivan market. The Sienna was marketed as the "Camry of Minivans." Even though the Sienna's drive train and chassis were an improvement over the earlier Toyota minivan models, it was still a smaller, less powerful option for minivan buyers.

These shortcomings were addressed in the redesign of Sienna for the 2004 model year. The second generation design featured a bigger engine, more cargo space, and a more driver-friendly interior design. Safety features were added, including tire-pressure monitoring, better vehicle stability control, and enhanced braking systems, and by 2006, side curtain airbags had become a standard feature. Toyota also began to offer an all-wheel drive option for the Sienna. The third generation of Sienna has been in production since the 2010 model year. Drivers now had five trim levels to choose from and even more options, including a smaller, more fuel efficient four-cylinder engine option. Additional changes were made to the transmission design and fuel systems.

Even from the first generation of Sienna minivans, safety and innovation have been trademarks of the Sienna family. The first Siennas offered side torso airbags and stability enhancements which made the Sienna much safer than its predecessor. Design modifications from the late 90s on saw additions such as sliding driver-side passenger doors and optional roof rack. Redesigns for the second generation included upgrades, such as parking sensors, a backup camera, and a voice-activated navigation system. The third generation of improvements saw such innovations as recliner style chairs, keyless smart key systems, LCD entertainment screens, and a pre-collision system for driving safety. Manufacturers have developed a number of after-market Toyota Sienna accessories to help protect the finishes, add convenience, and increase storage or transport options.

The Toyota Sienna has been recognized for innovation and safety. A few of the awards garnered by the Sienna over the years include Five Best Trucks (Car and Driver), Most Wanted Van (Edmunds), and Top Safety Pick (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Beyond the normal issues of vehicle wear and tear, the Toyota Sienna line has experienced its fair share of problems. The most serious quality problem for the Sienna was addressed when Toyota entered into a class-action settlement agreement related to problems many of their vehicles had with engine oil sludge. The engines in these cars would smoke, consume oil quickly, and eventually fail.

Toyota's reputation for quality is well-deserved, but even the most reliable cars have maintenance and repair needs. With millions of Sienna's sold, over multiple generations of design, it is good to have a Toyota Sienna parts catalog right at your digital fingertips, and PartsGeek.com gives you easy, online access to Toyota parts.
