Toyota Sequoia

American car companies have traditionally dominated the market for large SUVs, but the Toyota Sequoia has quietly made inroads into the market with generous features, reliability and performance. Introduced in 2000, this full-size SUV takes its design cues from the Toyota Tundra truck line and is armed with cavernous interiors and flexible cargo space. Brawny, yet incredibly quiet, the Sequoia accelerates quickly and is surprisingly maneuverable for a vehicle of its class. It has also earned certification as an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle. Remarkably, the Toyota Sequoia is also marks the first vehicle manufactured in the United States by any brand name Japanese car company.

Toyota has produced two generations of the Sequoia to date. Two models (SR5 and the Limited) were produced for the first generation Sequoias, which shared the same engine, dashboard, sheet metal and chassis as the popular Toyota Tundra trucks. The first generation Sequoia, which featured a 5.7L V8 engine with four-speed automatic transmission and Vehicle Stability Control, was nominated for the 2001 North American Truck of the Year Award. In 2005, Toyota replaced the four-speed automatic transmission with a five-speed transmission, redesigned the grille, and moved from an open differential to a Torsen center differential, while also adding front seat side airbags in 2007. Toyota implemented considerable improvements to the second generation Sequoias in 2008, moving to a fully-boxed frame and adding rear independent suspension to allow for more cargo space when seats are folded down, keyless entry, and increased towing capacity. Toyota also added a model featuring a 4.7L V6 engine capable of 381 horsepower and optional E85 Flex Fuel capabilities for vehicles based on the 5.7L V8 platform. Current models boast six-speed automatic transmissions, automatic climate control, blind spot monitoring, and smartphone integration.

When Sequoias first rolled off the production line, it was plagued with traction issues and failures, but subsequent models have held relatively solid safety ratings; in fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety cited the Sequoia's four-wheel drive model as having the lowest overall driver death rate in its class, and it earned four out of five stars for its rollover crash protection by the National Highway and Transportation Safety Association. As with any car having a solid safety record, there are bound to be recalls due to manufacturer defects, and Toyota has issued several recalls. In the 2003 Sequoia models, the Vehicle Stability Control System caused acceleration issues. The recent deaths and litigation tied to defects in Takata airbags prompted a recall for the 2004 model; however, this recall is not limited to Toyota and applies to many other car manufacturers who outfit their vehicles with Takata airbags.

The talk by Toyota about discontinuing the Sequoia line in the near future may have car owners worried about where to obtain quality Toyota Sequoia parts should their vehicles break down. Luckily, PartsGeek.com maintains an excellent selection in their Toyota Sequoia parts catalog. With a dependable source for new and used Toyota Sequoia parts, owners should rest assured and continue to schedule regular maintenance checks, with the confidence that parts and Sequoia accessories will be available when they need it.

Somewhat Satisfied

Very satisfied with all the store processes, it was cheap, free delivery, fast, and well packaged. Installation is still incomplete due to absolute lack of a detailed diagram of the entire ignition assembly unit (my part was a small piece therein) which I wholly blame Toyota., who wants to continue their monopoly on repairs, to the tune of 1500.00 for them to replace this part. Partgeeks ous great!
