Mercedes S600

The Mercedes S600 is one of the more recent additions to the company's venerable Sonderklasse S-series (the term is German for "Special Class"). This high-end series of luxury vehicles has introduced many advanced features over the decade, such as innovative safety systems and cutting-edge drive train features. Since the 1970s, the Sonderklasse has been among the most popular luxury sedans ever sold.

The Mercedes S600 is descended from a 1954 model that was called the Ponton. Today, the Ponton is considered a classic collector's vehicle, rarely seen outside of museums and car shows. Mercedes followed up the Ponton with an American-style model called the "Fintail," or Heckflosse. This model was designed specifically for export to the U.S., where tailfins on cars such as the Cadillac El Dorado, Chrysler New Yorker and a number of Chevrolet models had proven extremely popular. Interestingly, although such tail fins represented the automotive expression of the Jet Age, there was actually a practical consideration as well; the idea was to keep the vehicle stable at high speeds when encountering heavy crosswinds.

By the mid-1960s, tail fins on passenger sedans had fallen out of style as automotive consumers began showing a preference for sleeker designs. Mercedes responded with the W108/109 series, which was the immediate predecessor for the Sonderklasse. With a rounded, aerodynamic shape, it was among the first vehicles sold in the U.S. to have advanced fuel injection.

When the actual S Series Mercedes arrived in U.S. dealer showrooms, it wasn't an especially interesting or stylish-looking car. However, it offered several safety features that weren't available on most other cars of the time. These included head rests and extra interior padding as well as a special windshield design that channeled water away from the surface, increasing visibility in stormy weather.

Over the years, those safety features have only gotten better. Along with a newly-designed dashboard with easy-to-see animated graphics, the latest S-Class models feature a "smart" suspension system that automatically adjusts to road conditions, crash-avoidance technology and driver assistance. The Mercedes S600 itself is the top-of-the-line luxury sedan (as well it should be, at a price tag of over $190,000). Powered by a 523 horsepower 6.0 liter V-12, it is considered the quietest vehicle on the market - as well as the most luxurious. The seats are essentially leather recliners in which passengers can get hot-stone massage, and the cabin is equipped with a special air filtration system.

For such a high-end, high-priced luxury vehicle, it should come as little surprise that Mercedes Benz S600 accessories and parts are rather expensive. For example, the coil pack for your Ford that you might pay $100 for at your local auto parts shop will set you back $2000 at your Mercedes dealership. When looking for Mercedes S600 spare parts, you should definitely shop around. is one source that can save you serious money in this regard, as they offer steep discounts - in some cases, of up to 80%.

Reviewer: Beautiful part at an excellent price

I couldn't be more happy with the tie rod! Sometimes you hate putting replacement parts on your car because they are not machined as nice, finished as nice, or may not even fit quite right. Not the case here, perfect fit, nicely machined threads and shoulder faces, painted, and ready to go on the car without any massaging.
