Mercedes S550

The Mercedes S550 is considered to be part of the Mercedes S-Class which was the flagship model for Mercedes Benz. The S-Class was originally launched in 1972 with the S550 as a mid-size sedan. The S550 was part of the fifth generation of Mercedes cars launched in 2007. There was no big change from its predecessors in regards to the outward shape and design of the car. However, Mercedes decided to change the S550 interior and engine. The S550 had a V8 engine which was considerably different than previous years. For the first four years until 2011, the Mercedes S550 had a V8 5.5-liter engine producing 382 horsepower. The S550's were also constructed with the W221 chassis as compared to the W220 used in models from 1999. The Mercedes S550 for sale not only had an upgraded engine, but the engine was remade with the original four-valves per cylinder. The 2007 model set the standard for this luxury car as Mercedes decided to make many of the potential options as standard features. The 2007 S550 had a seven-speed automatic transmission with anti-lock brakes and special airbag technology. Car buyers could expect other features such as tire-pressure monitoring and trailer stabilization as part of the options list.

The 2008 Mercedes S550 model year saw the release of a four-door sedan which could seat up to five people. Car buyers enjoyed the power from the 5.5-liter V8 engine which produced 382 horsepower for the wheel system. The transmission for 2008 was only a seven-speed automatic transmission. However, there was a choice of this car being configured with either 4Matic all-wheel drive or a rear-wheel drive. Mercedes Benz offered top of the line safety features with Pre-Safe Accident Readiness and a multi-airbag system. The S550 was released in North America and was the equivalent of the S500 available in international markets.

2009 was a significant year for the S550 as it won the Car and Driver award for a five-way comparison test against two other luxury sedan models manufactured by Audi and BMW. Motor Trend magazine also declared the S550 the winner during a three-way comparison test against Audi and BMW luxury sedans in the same class. The 2010 models were given a complete facelift with LED bulbs placed in the taillights and a change in shape to the grille in the front. Even the front bumper was redesigned with better rear-view mirrors and the inclusion of LED turn signals. The wheels were upgraded to a more luxury style befitting the S-Class. Buyers were able to see tailpipes now fully integrated into the rear car bumper. Performance tests during this time clocked the S550 as being able to go from 0-60mph in under 5.4 seconds.

Mercedes produced a hybrid model in 2014 for the S550 in 2015 model year. This model was called the S550 Plug-In Hybrid. Buyers could look forward to a powerful V8 engine, but with less fuel consumption as a hybrid model. It was recharged in four hours using a 230-volt plug or half this time using a 400-volt plug.
