1963 Buick Riviera Power

Buick Riviera

Part luxury, part muscle car, the Buick Riviera hit the market in 1963. The debut was the first time General Motors attempted to put out a luxury car, and it did fairly well with the Riviera staying in production until 1999.

The first generation earned high marks and started the GM E platform. Throughout its lifetime, the Riviera saw some changes that helped it to solidify itself as a classic. It even spurned two concept cars in 2007 and 2013.

A Brief Riviera History

GM launched the Riviera because it needed something to go up against the Ford Thunderbird. From 1963 to 1971, sales were very strong for this vehicle. It did amazing and stood up well to the popular Thunderbird. However, there were ups and downs, with a restyling in 1971 causing some serious losses.

The first few model years the Riviera showed its uniqueness. The body style was unique and never-before seen by consumers. It had an aggressive front end and razor-edge roof. The grille was an egg-crate style, and it had pontoon fenders.

In 1964, GM brought out the classic "R" emblem for the first time ever. In 1965, the styling included concealed headlamps and taillights moved to the rear bumper.

1966 was a huge year for the Riviera, bringing a complete redesign, which consumers simply loved. Sales skyrocketed due to pivoting headlamps, a wider and longer frame, and seat options that allowed the car to seat up to six passengers.

GM didn't change much in 1967 except changing the engine to a V8 with 360 horsepower, which was something that delighted consumers. 1968 and 1969 brought some small styling changes.

Another restyling occurred in 1970. GM exposed the headlamps, changed up the front and rear bumpers and upgraded the engine again. Consumers didn't like the changes and sales dropped.

Attempting to regain the market share it lost the previous model year, GM made sweeping changes in 1971. Called a radical redesign, the new incarnation of the Riviera had a boat tail that turned consumers away. Despite the loss of sales, GM didn't do much more in the following model years.

Creating Nostalgia

If you love older vehicles, like the Riviera, then you may want to consider restoring one. There are a few tips to keep in mind that can help you get the most from your restoration adventure.

Carefully assess rust. It may be minor, but it also could spell huge trouble. If rust has eaten the chassis, it may not be worth salvaging. Other parts are often easy to replace, but be sure you can get your hands on replacement parts. Check PartGeek.com for hard to get parts.

It's also important to map out your project, both for time and money. If you don't plan ahead by preparing a timeline and budget, you could end up being unable to see it through to completion.

You also need to be sure you have the space in which to work. Not only do you need room for the car and space in which to work but also you need to plan ahead for storing parts, tools and everything else it will take to get the beauty back in shape.

Lastly, it doesn't hurt to ask for help. Try to seek out someone who has restored a car before. They can offer you valuable advice and assistance as you begin your project.

The Riviera Lives

There is no doubt that in its heyday, the Buick Riviera was one of the must-have vehicles on the road. You can revive that spirit and put one of these babies back on the road if you undertake one as a restoration project. Just remember to check PartsGeek.com to help you get everything you need to get your Riviera cruising the streets again.

This part was installed on 15 Apr '18 (about a week ago) on my 97 Riviera. This part is specifically designed for high temperature regions, like here in Arizona. So far, this Orifice Tube has met my expectations. If you live in an area where high temperatures are routinely encountered, I suggest paying the slight difference in price to obtain this part. - A/C Hi Temp Orifice Tube-97 Riviera

When the A/C System on my 97 Riviera failed, I decided to spend the extra money to replace some of the key components while there...(compressor, orifice tube, o-ring kit and accumulator). This is a name brand accumulator, and while it's only been installed for a week, I'm expecting years of service in the harsh Arizona environment. .. - Delco A/C System Accumulator-97 Riviera
