Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup

The Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup was manufactured by the German multinational automobile manufacturer, Volkswagen. The first Volkswagen Rabbit rolled off the assembly line in New Stanton, Westmoreland county Pennsylvania, in 1979. It was categorized as a leisure activity vehicle (LAV) and was manufactured mainly with the US and Canadian markets in mind. In the USA, they were sold from 1980 to 1983 model years, while in Canada, models between 1981 and 1983 were sold.

While in Canada, models with 1.6L 48 hp diesel with 4 and 5 speed manuals transmissions were sold, buyers in the USA could choose between 57 kW (78 hp) 1.6L or 54 kW (74 hp) 1.7L gasoline engines as well as the diesel engine. Buyers in North America had the option between trim levels such as LX and Sportruck, and also between 1.5L diesel and the 1.7L petrol engines. The diesel version came with a five speed gearbox.

Towards the end of 1983, while production stalled in the USA, the Caddy started being manufactured in Europe, with the first Caddy for the European markets rolling off the assembly line at Yugoslavia. Production continued at the rate of 1000 per month, and dwindled in 1991 because of the war. It must be noted that while in the USA it was given the name Rabbit, it was referred to as the Volkswagen Caddy elsewhere in the world, including in Europe. The original version of the vehicle was continued to be produced in South Africa near Port Elizabeth till 2007. VW Rabbit pickup body parts can also be used for the Caddy.

There were some significant differences between the North American Rabbit and the European Caddy. While the North American Rabbits sported square 4x6" Halogen sealed beams, European models had round 7" H4 lights with signal lights mounted on the front bumper. The Rabbit had metal front bumpers, and the Caddy had two separate bumpers on the rear and supported longer license plates. European models sported various 1.8L 8.5-1 compression Cabriolet / Scirocco gasoline engines.

The second generation of VW Caddy was manufactured in Spain and released in 1995 and was named as Volkswagen Caddy Typ 9K, or Volkswagen Polo Caddy. It received cosmetic changes in 2005, though the basic engineering remained the same. The third generation of the vehicle, boasting of a more aerodynamic layout, was unveiled at the RAI Commercial Vehicle Show in Amsterdam in 2005. The Caddy Typ 9U was introduced in 1996, while the Caddy Panel Van started being manufactured in 2010 and is still in production. It was named the Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine's Small Van of the Year 2007 and the Van Fleet World's Best Small Van 2007. It also got the 2008 Best Small Van Award at Fleet News.
