Toyota Pickup

The Toyota Pickup has a venerable history going back over half a century. The most recognizable of all Toyota products, this iconic line of utility vehicles have gained a reputation for reliability and economy. Toyota pickups are a favorite of off-road motorists throughout the world, due to their rugged construction and proven ability to take a lot of punishment while operating under the most extreme conditions.

The story of the Toyota Pickup in the United States begins in 1964, with a humble little vehicle known as the "Stout 4x2," the first model sold domestically. It was a Spartan vehicle, with a hard bench seat, a metal dashboard, four-speed manual transmission - and little else. Its successor, the Toyota Hilux, was introduced four years later, and was indeed a luxurious vehicle compared to the Stout. The next generation of Toyota Pickups, introduced in 1972, offered several options and upgrades, including a more comfortable interior, a larger, more powerful 2.0-liter engine, an extended bed and choice of three-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmissions. The third generation introduced four-wheel drive to the North American market in 1979, featuring a solid front axle and leaf-spring suspension system. One of the major innovations was the gear-driven RF1A transfer case, which provided a lower gear ratio than the competition. The '79 Hilux was also the first Toyota Pickup to offer an automatic transmission as an option.

Over the next thirty-five years, the Toyota Pickup underwent numerous transformations, including major facelifts in 2008 and 2011. Today's Toyota Pickup is a large, powerful and luxurious vehicle, enabling their owners to get the job done in style and comfort. A range of engine options are available, from economical four-cylinder power plants to the massive 4.0 liter V6 1GR-FE. The most recent motors feature Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) technology, offering a quantum leap in performance and reliability.

There have been relatively few complaints about Toyota Pickups. Most problems occur with 1992 models. The most commonly-reported issues with '92 have to do with deterioration of the frame, followed by engine stalls and suspension problems. Engine problems such as a defective aluminum head and major oil leaks are also frequently reported on 1988 models. Most of these problems occur once the vehicle is past 160,000 miles. These are issues to keep in mind if you are looking at an older Toyota Pickup for sale on the used vehicle market.

Fortunately, maintains an extensive Toyota Pickup parts catalogs. This is important to keep in mind, even if your Toyota Pickup is a newer, more reliable model; whether you plan on using OEM or aftermarket parts, you'll need to know where to obtain the best selection at the lowest prices. From ordinary maintenance items such as oil filters to major engine and drive train components, you'll find what you need at online parts suppliers like
