Toyota Paseo

In 1992, Japanese auto maker Toyota introduced the Toyota Paseo, an affordable front-wheel drive performance-oriented sport coupe with the same engine and wheelbase as the Toyota Tercel. It sold in the U.S. from 1991 to 1998, and until 2000 in Europe, before being discontinued.

The early design of the Paseo's first generation was a two-door sport coupe with a 1.5-liter I4 engine featuring twin camshafts and 16-valves that delivered 100 hp and 91 pound-feet of torque, which was matched with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The Paseo coupe's 2+2 seating configuration included two front bucket seats with a somewhat cramped-for-legroom rear seating arrangement. The Paseo underwent an exterior/ interior redesign (for 1996) and driver and passenger airbags became standard equipment in 1996.

The second generation of the Paseo began in 1995 for the 1996 model year, with a slight redesign of the front end. It received an engine upgrade in a stab at reducing emission levels for California sales, but the redesign was a trade-off in an attempt to be more 'eco-friendly', and restricted the engine upgrade to a top production of only 93 horsepower, a decrease of 7 hp from the previous engine. That engine version was then made standard on all Paseos but in other states they were designed to allowed an increased torque to 1000 pound-feet. Toyota had Automobile Specialty Company (ASC) in Long Beach, California transform hardtop coupes into convertibles and introduced the Paseo convertible in 1997, but altogether the Paseo's sales remained unspectacular.

The interior of the Paseo was hardly geared for luxury, with simple fabric seating and no leather options. The dashboard was small and unfeatured, other than the built-in manufacturer's CD player. A small rear spoiler was available and the side mirrors of the second generation, previously only in black, now matched the body paint and it was equipped with a front disc rear drum brake setup with ABS optional.

Only about 100,000 Paseos were sold , but as with most little sport cars, they had their supporters. A limited edition model of the Paseo, known as the Galliano, was introduced in Britain, featuring a chin spoiler and mud guards, and 15-inch alloy wheels. It was canary yellow with aquamarine decals along the body, but the engine was the same, with only a top recorded speed of 112 mph.

Toyota Paseo parts are mostly available at foreign auto parts stores and at online auto parts websites. Consumable items like filters, plugs, hoses, and light bulbs are the most easily located, but for larger or more expensive items, look for places that offer genuine Toyota OEM parts. The distant last year of sale for the Paseo and the comparatively small number of the Toyota Paseos sold resulted in fewer and possibly lower quality Toyota Paseo aftermarket parts where any discount may not be worth it. Owners should locate genuine Toyota Paseo parts by utilizing the expertise of available auto parts people, Toyota Paseo schematic diagrams and Toyota Paseo Parts catalogs to ensure buying the right items.
