Mercury Mountaineer

Also known as the Ford Explorer, the Mercury Mountaineer was a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and sold by Ford' Mercury Division between 1997 and 2010. In fact, for all intents and purposes, the two vehicles were virtually identical; nearly all components are interchangeable with Ford Exporer parts. The only difference lay in some of the exterior styling as well as interior appointments; the Mountaineer had a more luxurious interior than the Explorer, and the average sticker price was $3000, depending on the options selected.

The first Mountaineer models were powered by a 215 horsepower, 5.0 liter V8, coupled to a four-seed automatic. Only all-wheel drive was available, unlike its sister model, the Explorer, which had a two-wheel drive option. Although it had been greatly anticipated, sales of the Mercury Mountaineer were less than the executives at the Lincoln-Mercury Division had hoped for. In order to rectify that situation, some styling cues were changed and a smaller, 205 horsepower V6 was offered. Eventually, the Mountaineer became one of Mercury's most popular vehicles, but it was never as big a seller as the Explorer.

In 2002, the Mountaineer underwent some extensive design changes. Inside, the interior was made to look more upscale and was furnished with a complete entertainment system for the back row. Options included rear ceiling air vents and a chrome exhaust tip and roof rack. In 2006, Lincoln-Mercury upped the ante again with a new platform, a DVD-based navigation system with voice control and power retractable running boards that had been features of the by-then discontinued Lincoln Navigator. A more powerful, 292 horsepower V8 Modular was introduced, along with a six-speed automatic transmission.

More high-tech goodies were yet to come. The 2009 Mountaineer received fuel-saving traffic flow monitoring and even live updates on fuel prices from filling stations in the driver's area. The following year, the Mountaineer came with Ford's MyKey security system, allowing the owner to program vehicle security for different drivers in the household.

Although the Mercury Mountaineer had been the division's third best selling vehicle at the turn of the century, by 2010, dealers were having trouble giving them away. Production of the Mountaineer was discontinued in 2010.

There was one serious safety issue that came to the public's attention in 2000. A number of Ford and Mercury vehicles came off the assembly line with Firestone tires, which tended to fail prematurely at an alarming rate. After an investigation, the Ford Motor Company decided to end its business relationship with Firestone. On the other hand, the Mountaineer did win some safety awards, including Class Exclusive Roll Stability Control and Consumer Digest's Best Buy for 2006-07. More recent Mountaineer models offer a decent ride and handling with its tuned suspension system and all-wheel drive. Although other SUVs may do better in off-road driving, the Mountaineer has better towing capacity than most. Consider Mercury Mountaineer performance parts if you plan to do much heavy towing.
