MG MGB

The first MGB was released in 1962 by the British Motor Corporation. The iconic two-door, soft-top convertible was manufactured until 1980. With the “poor man’s Aston Martin” in mind, MG General Manager John Thornley proposed the initial concept of the popular sports car.

Original Specifications

When initially released to the United States market in 1963, a 4-cylinder, 1.8 L engine powered the MG. The agile MG zipped from 0 to 60 mph in 12.2 seconds. The MG’s chrome bumpers were replaced with rubber bumpers in 1974 to meet federal safety standards in the United States. Several years later, the vehicle’s height was raised by 1 inch to comply with federal headlight requirements.

In 1963, a brand-new MG cost under $3,000, roughly the equivalent of $22,900 in today’s dollars. The resale market for the classic car remains robust, with the vehicle condition determining the price. Today, well maintained MG’s in excellent condition can sell for over $12,000, especially if they are from the desirable chrome bumper, pre-1973 era.

Restoration and Repair

When purchasing a classic car such as the MG, obtain a comprehensive vehicle history documenting the maintenance and restorative work. As with many classic cars, the MGB body is susceptible to rust. Thoroughly examine the car’s structure to assess any corrosion damage. If you see rust bubbles on the surface of the vehicle, assume there is more rust underneath. Corrosion can make for an expensive restoration so carefully inspect the areas of the MGB that are most prone to corrosion.

  • Vertical diaphragm panel
  • Front underwing reinforcements
  • Top section of the rear wheel arches
  • Rear section of the integrated chassis legs

Instead of undertaking the labor-intensive restoration of a body with corrosion damage, you can purchase a brand new MGB bodyshell manufactured by British Motor Heritage. A replica of the original, except with better quality, zinc-coated steel provides rust protection and may be cheaper than restoring a corroded original. If you keep the original frame, purchase aftermarket underwing shields to prevent water from getting into the sills and front lights.

Minor oil leaks are expected for a classic car, but you do not want a minor leak to turn into anything major. Gaskets and seals can dry up on older vehicles that are not driven regularly. Check the differential pinion seal, axles, transmission, and brake cylinders. It is a good idea to replace old seals, gaskets, and hoses. Old fluids should be drained and replace with new fluids. Other parts that often require replacement are the fuel pump, fuel lines, and carburetor. The original twin 6-volt battery system is often replaced with a single 12-volt battery.

Restoring the trim, bumpers, and grills can be expensive. After a thorough cleaning, these original parts can be repainted and used on the rebuild. Bag and tag all the parts as you remove them from the original body to make reinstallation a breeze.

Whether you are beginning a restoration project or just keeping your MG MGB in great condition, PartsGeek.com has all the parts you need to keep your vehicle looking and running its best.

I've found this to be the best kit for this carb AND CHOKE.

I've found others that don't have the O-Rings that are needed for parts inside the choke (in the area the manuals tell you Don't Go There Unless YOU REALLY NEED TO) - ThrRedSho
