Chevrolet Lumina

The name "Chevrolet Lumina" has been applied to several different Chevy models over the years. When the Lumina first came out in 1990, it was the name of a sedan as well as a minivan and even a coupe. Interestingly, the Chevrolet Lumina coupe was intended to replace the legendary Monte Carlo, but then itself was replaced in 1995 by a new generation of that same Monte Carlo.

The first Lumina was actually one of Chevy's NASCAR vehicles, produced the year before it showed up in dealer showrooms. It was constructed on GM's "W-Body" platform, which was also used for the company's other mid-sized models, such as the Buicl Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass and Pontiac Grand Prix. Its primary competitor was the Ford Taurus when it first rolled off the assembly line in 1990. Engine choices ranged from a 2.2 liter 122 inline four to a 3.4 liter LQ1 V6 with dual overhead cams. The latter was a special high-performance model, which also had sport-tuned suspension and a five speed Getrag manual transmission. That Lumina was able to go from zero to sixty in just over seven seconds.

The first generation Lumina sedan got high ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for frontal driver collisions, but was not rated in other areas. The Lumina sedan was discontinued after only four years. The high performance sedan was replaced by the Monte Carlo Z34 for the 1995 model year.

In 1994, the next generation Lumina arrived in dealer showrooms. It was a distinct improvement over its predecessor, with a sport tuned suspension and a 180 horsepower, 3.1 liter V6. After production of the Chevy Caprice was discontinued in 1996, an optional 215 horsepower, 3.4 liter V6 was made available as an option on the LTZ model. The vehicle became popular with police departments and taxi cab companies. After 1997, the Lumina was fitted with new, upgraded air bags. Two years later, it was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala, though production of the Lumina continued as company fleet cars for corporate buyers. Occasionally, these show up at auctions. Since fleet cars are usually well-maintained, a used Chevrolet Lumina from a company fleet can be a good buy.

In addition to the top LTZ model, the Lumina was available as an entry-level base model and as a mid-range model (the LS), which had a larger engine, anti-lock brakes and a remote keyless entry system as well as a tachometer, power windows and dual climate controls.

The Chevy Lumina parts catalog at offers a complete range of Lumina accessories and parts at generous discounts. In many cases, parts and accessories for many vehicles can be purchased for up to 80% off the original retail price, since PartsGeek doesn't have to deal with many overhead costs. Whether it is for major repairs or just those day-to-day maintenance jobs that keep you Lumina in top condition, you'll want to check out the product offerings at PartsGeek for the best deals.
