Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is an attractive little beast - if you can find one. This variant of the famous Volkswagen Beetle, which remained almost unchanged for fifty years of production, combined Volkswagen engineering and mechanicals with Italian style automotive design (the body was in fact the brainchild of the famous designer, Luigi Segre of Il Carrozzeria Ghia in the ancient city of Turin in northwestern Italy). Although considered a "sports car," underneath the stylish body, it was still a low powered VW Beetle with the same sluggish, overgrown, air-cooled motorcycle engine. Nonetheless, it looks good. Between into introduction in 1955 and and the end of production in 1974, nearly half a million of these cars were built and sold throughout the world.

To be fair, Volkswagen never claimed that it was a sports car. Instead, VW marketed it as a practical four seater coupe - that just happened to have sporty looking coachwork. Since it shared its underpinnings with the Beetle, whatever upgrades were given the Beetle were shared with the Karmann Ghia. Eventually, both wound up with a 1.6 liter engine, delivering a blistering 60 horsepower (woo-hoo!) In 1957, VW came out with a convertible version of the Karmann Ghia, which today - assuming it's in decent, driveable condition and doesn't have too many miles on it - can command selling prices of $12,000 to $20,000 or more.

Even back in the day, the Karmann Ghia was pricier than a lot of new cars. A base model in 1961 cost around $2700, which is a little under $22,000 today. By comparison, a new 1961 VW Beetle when for just over $2000 (around $16,000 in present day dollars). The reason for the higher sticker price: the coachwork. As the name indicates, the Karmann Ghia body was not constructed at Volkswagen, but at the factory of Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, originally a manufacturer of horse-drawn carriages that evolved with the growing auto industry in the 20th Century. Unlike the Beetle, which was machine welded and bolted to the chassis, the Karmann Ghia was butt-welded, seam to seam, then painstakingly shaped by hand - a very labor intensive process.

If you own a Karmann Ghia and aren't satisfied with the original, 60 HP stock engine, you might be interested to know that many VW components are interchange with those of some Porsche models. However, be aware that the Karmann Ghia is still a VW Beetle underneath, and handles just about as well. So, if you are thinking about a conversion like this, be prepared to do a whole lot of modifications with the suspension, steering and drive train - otherwise, you cold be asking for a whole lot of trouble.

For restoration work on an older model that has been sitting for awhile, consult the Karmann Ghia parts catalog at PartsGeek.com. It's a gookd place to shop for Volkswagen Karmann Ghia parts, accessories and other components you'll need for such a project. Although you won't fins Karmann Ghia body parts there, you'll be able to find virtually everything else that goes under the hood and under the frame, from spark plugs to shocks - all at discounts of up to 80%.
