Cadillac Eldorado

If there is one automobile that is an American icon, it would be the Cadillac Eldorado - specifically, the second and third generation models built between 1954 and 1960 with their big, sweeping tail fins. Although the tail fins had disappeared by the mid-1960s, the Eldorado has remained iconic - the quintessentially American luxury car and status symbol.

Appropriately, the words "el dorado" translate from Spanish as "the golden one." According to legend, the original concept model was named for the El Dorado Country Club in Indian Wells, California, near Palm Springs - a favorite hangout for General Motors execs at the time. (Of course, that club didn't open until 1957 - four years after the first Cadillac Eldorado rolled off the assembly line. So much for legend...)

The first Cadillac Eldorado was part of a line of luxury convertibles GM produced in 1953 (along with the very similar Oldsmobile 98 Fiesta). This first model, produced in very limited numbers (only 532 were built, making it a priceless classic today), it featured "bumper bullets" and small tailfins. It was also the first production automobile to have a "wraparound" windshield. Although it was essentially a variation of the standard model (the Cadillac Series 62), it sold for twice as much; the sticker price was a whopping $7,750 (almost $70,000 in today's dollars). Not surprisingly, the first Eldorado made up only one-half of one percent of GM's total sales that year.

The following year, those iconic tail fins got bigger and longer. By 1959, the had assumed the large, pointed shape that is so well remembered today. (One interesting fact is that although tail fins were all the rage in automotive styling of that time period, they had a practical purpose, at least in theory - the idea was to stabilize the vehicle while traveling at high speed through crosswinds.) In 1961 however, those tail fins began to shrink, and had all but disappeared by 1966, when it started to resemble its rival, the Lincoln Continental.

The last Cadillac Eldorado was built in 2002. By this time, the price tag (adjusted for inflation) had dropped considerably, and the fuel economy figures had risen dramatically; the 2002 Eldorado, equipped with a 4.6 liter Northstar V8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission, could go up to 32 miles on a gallon of gasoline while traveling on the open highway.

How well a latter-day Caddy runs depends on what sort of care and maintenance it has received. There are Eldorados built in the early 1990s that are still running strong, while other more recent models are nothing but trouble. While a classic 1950s-vintage Eldorado will set you back $150,000 or more, a decent used Eldorado from the 1990s can be had for around $10,000. Cadillac Eldorado used parts can be a good buy, depending what they are, but there are other components you'll definitely want to get new.
