Toyota Echo

The Toyota Platz aka Toyota Echo is a subcompact car that Toyota Motors manufactured in Japan from 1999 through 2005 when the Toyota Belta replaced it. Toyota designed this model as the XP10 series and sold it in export markets as the Echo or the Yaris. These names were also used in a related export market, the Toyota Vitz hatchback, which is where the name Platz was derived. The word "platz" means space in German, and it clearly defines the interior spaciousness of the vehicle. In Japan the only option was a four-door sedan though a coupe was available in North America under the Echo name.

The Platz originally entered the market in 1991 as a sedan in the international marketplace. A coupe was introduced only in North America for the 2000 model year under the Echo name where a coupe guise was also available. The Platz is closely related to the Vitz hatchback; it shares front doors, common interior, and mechanical components with that model. It also shares various components with the ist and Toyota bB (Scion xA and XB in the United States) and the Japanese-only WiLL Vi. This same platform is the basis of the Japanese-only Probox and Succeed wagons.

The Echo sold almost 50,000 units in its very first year and half that many in 2003. The Echo was the result of Toyota Project Genesis, an unsuccessful effort to encourage younger buyers to the market in the United States. It sold quite well in Canada where Toyota also offered three- and five-door versions of the Toyota Vitz under the name "Echo:" this was in spite of the fact they entered the marketplace in 2004 as a replacement for the Toyota Echo coupe that last sold in Canada following model year2002. The coupe was no longer sold in Canada after the 2003 model year due to the large response for hatchbacks. It remained in the United States marketplace until production of the coupe and sedan ended in 2005.

The Platz was the predecessor to the North American Toyota Yaris and shared many of the same features that included placement of the speedometer and gauges in the middle instead of front of the steering wheel. It is quite rare to find any power options on the Echo; the majority of units have manual windows and locks, air conditioning, and an audio system with six speakers and either a CD or cassette player. The Toyota Platz was sold in China as the Xiali from 2000 to 2005 and the Xiali Veta from 2005 to 2012. It came equipped with a 1.5-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. There was no option for a four-speed automatic. In some parts of Southeast Asia there was a modified version of the Platz sold with different body panels. It was sold under the name Toyota Vios and was not marketed in Hong Kong and Japan.
