Ford E250 Econoline

The full-sized Ford Econoline rolled out of the factory in 1960. Also known as the Club Wagon, it was among the best selling full-sized vans in history, continuing in production for over half a century. Ultimately, the Econoline accounted to 80% of all van sales in the U.S.

Some of these were sold to individual consumers. However, most Econoline vans were sold to professional tradesmen, businesses with fleets and organizations such as educational institutions, nursing homes and churches. Retailers and delivery companies employ Econolines for the transport of merchandise and equipment - in fact, nearly 50% of Ford Econolines are designed and built to carry cargo.

Originally, the Ford Econoline and its domestic competitor, thr Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Sportswagon, were introduced to compete with the popular VW Type 2 Microbus, which arrived in the U.S. in 1955. The Econoline was built on the same platform as the Ford Falcon - and was in fact known as the Ford Falcon Club Wagon. This was the first van manufactured in the U.S. to feature a "cab over" design, meaning that the cab is located above the front-mounted engine. One distinct advantage the Econoline had over its VW and Chevy rivals was a powerful water cooled inline six - offering more power than the air cooled engines that powered the other models. Two engine options were available - a 144 cubic inch model, and a larger 240 cubic inch power plant. Customers could choose between a three speed manual or an automatic transmission. The original plan on Ford's part was to turn most of these into cab over pickup trucks, and indeed, a number of these were made. However, they never totaled more than ten percent of production. The Ford Econoline E250 cargo van and others were far more popular.

The best part of the Econoline was the abundance of cargo space. The first models offered 40% more hauling capacity than a ton panel truck of the time, with over 200 cubic feet of cargo space. This is the main reason that the Econoline is a favorite of electricians, plumbers and other professionals. During the first year of production alone, 30,000 Econoline cargo vans were sold.

In the late 1960s, Ford updated the Econoline in many significant ways. The old Ford Falcon platform was replaced by that of the F-Series pickup and the engine was upgraded to a 302 cubic inch V8, giving the Econoline a great deal more in the way of carrying and hauling capacity. The engine was also made more accessible through a hood in the front. In 1972, the Ford Motor Company began offering their "cutaway" chassis so that second stage manufacturers could build cargo trucks, camping vehicles and even ambulances. Even today, an RV company will use the Econline cutaway to build a Ford Econoline E250 camper van.

When looking for a Ford E250 Econoline for sale, look at the maintenance history, as these vans get a lot of hard use over the years. You'll find Ford E250 Econoline van parts at discounts of up to 80% at PartsGeek.com.
