Ford Contour

The 1995 model year Ford Contour was a North American, mid-sized sedan introduced in 1994. The Contour was intended to replace the retired Ford Temp model. The Contour (along with the Mercury motor company's variant, the Mystique) were developed as sedan-only versions of the Ford Mondeo project, a "world car" project that was meant to streamline and standardize car production for various global business segments. Unfortunately, the Contour seemed to fall in between United States buying blocks: too pricey for the compact car buyers and too small for families to feel comfortable.

When the Contour was first introduced, it could be purchased in one of three trim levels. The base level was known as the GL, and it included only the basic features and few options. The Ford Contour LX was considered to be more luxurious, while the Contour SE was the more sporty option. The GL and LX models included a four cylinder engine, offering 125 horsepower as a standard. The SE sporty model of the Ford Contour included a standard V6 engine and 170 horsepower. The larger V6 engine was available as an option for the other two models. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard on all Ford Contour vehicles, but an automatic transmission was available.

Reviews were generally positive for the Contour and Mystique. Ride quality was good. The car handled well. The Ford Contour was listed as one of the ten best cars by Car and Driver magazine for three years running, and it earned a reputation as a fun-to-drive sedan with good handling. Automobile Magazine listed the Ford Contour as an auto all star for many years, but the critical acclaim did not seem to translate into sales. The car's unpopularity stemmed from being undersized and overpriced. There were other options available to US car buyers. Possible Ford Contour buyers were drawn to the Chrysler Cirrus, the Chevrolet Malibu, and even Ford's own Taurus model. These other options were either better priced or larger, and Ford was forced to heavily discount the Contour to make sales, which dramatically reduced the profit the car was providing to the company. Ford attempted to redesign and upgrade the 1998 Ford Contour with a specially tuned engine, new body features, improved styling for the interior seats and trim, larger wheels and high performance tires, and an upgraded braking and suspension system. Alas, it wasn't enough to save the struggling model. In 2000, Ford discontinued the Contour line.

There are still a number of Contours on the road, which means plenty of people are on the lookout for Ford Contour aftermarket parts and accessories. You might be able to find Ford Contour used parts nearby, but the better option is to use an online auto parts retailer like to help you locate and purchase Ford Contour performance parts. Online search powered by a website like will help you find the right Ford Contour parts and then deliver them right to your door so that you can keep your Contour on the road.
