1962 Mercury Comet

Mercury Comet

Although now defunct, Mercury was once one of the most successful divisions of the Ford Motor Company. It was founded in 1938 to help give Ford an edge over its primary competitors, GM and Chrysler, who were also creating new divisions and scooping up promising smaller brands to increase their market shares. Popular Mercury vehicles included the Eight, the Monterey and the Montego. None have quite the exciting backstory of the Comet, however, a little car that might have single-handedly saved the brand from becoming obsolete ahead of its time.

Comet Brand

When the Comet was first released, it didn't have a make. It was originally designed for Edsel, Ford's fourth brand, which was active from 1956 until 1959. The brand did very poorly and closed just before the Comet was set to release, leaving thousands of cars already manufactured with nowhere to go. Ford added a quick Comet logo and put the cars into lots at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships. The new compact began selling like crazy, and Mercury claimed it in 1960. It quickly became one of Mercury's most popular models, running for 17 years and selling over 1.6 million cars.

Mercury Reputation

One of the biggest reasons Edsel failed was its ill-fated decision to cut corners and offer "budget" cars. Mercury was similarly designed to be an entry-level brand, and for most of the 50s, it struggled to avoid being pigeonholed as a cheap throwaway car. When Mercury inherited the Comet, the brand decided to take drastic action to ensure the Comet wasn't shrugged off.

First, Ford booked a track at the Daytona International Speedway in 1963 and set five of its latest Comets to run flat out all day and night for 42 days. Each car went over 100,000 miles in that short time, and although they naturally had to stop for fuel, driver changes and maintenance, the cars averaged 105 MPH. No one could say that these cars weren't durable.

Mercury wasn't done, though. In 1965 endurance racer Fran Hernandez and his team were hired to drive three Comets all the way from the southernmost tip of South America all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska in 40 days. The cars traveled 16,000 miles, much of this over unpaved or nonexistent roads, and effectively washed away Mercury's reputation for bad quality. The stunts worked well and resulted in record sales.

Lifelong Models

Though you can't find new Mercury models anymore, the Comet retains its reputation for a sturdy vehicle. Refurbished models often make appearances at classic car shows. One famous model is the 1964 Comet Caliente owned by Rachel Veitch which still runs after 576,000 miles and half a century of use, although Veitch herself has retired from driving due to health concerns and doesn't want to risk damaging the car.

Though it's not the first or only car to travel for 42 days straight on a track or complete the pan-American highway, the Comet is still quite impressive. It's possible that if Mercury had funded a few more vehicles like the Comet, the brand might still be thriving today.
