Mazda B3000

The B Series compact pick up trucks produced by Mazda saw their first life in the Japanese auto market in 1961. Sold under the name, Proceed, in Japan, the B Series vehicles were also given different labels in different countries of sale, including Mazda Bravo, Mazda Bounty, and Mazda Drifter in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, respectively. The B Series trucks sold around the world prior to 1994 were engineered and designed by Mazda. The B Series was first introduced to the US in 1972 with the B1600 truck. Prior The B Series Mazda trucks sold in the US used a naming convention which reflected the engine displacement in the name, so that the 1972 Mazda B1600 indicated the engine was 1.6 liters or the 1980 B2000 reflected a larger, 2.0 liter engine under the hood.

1994 was a turning point for Mazda as the fifth generation of the B Series was redesigned for North America. The old Proceed-based platform was relegated to Japanese and other overseas markets, and a completely new design and framework was used for the Americas. The new Mazda trucks were nearly identical to the Ford Ranger trucks after 1994. They shared design, optional features, and engines, including two new, much larger engines to be found in the Mazda B3000 and B4000 versions of the truck. The B3000 and B4000 featured larger, Ford V6 engines and an option for a manual transmission which had fallen out of fashion with the earlier Mazda trucks. The utilization of a partnership with Ford also meant that there were more options for upgrades like an extended cab, all wheel drive, and multiple trim lines including the LE and SE iterations of the Mazda B3000. The B3000 was manufactured in 1994, 1995, and 1996, but it sat out the 1997 model year in anticipation of a model refresh which occurred in 1998.

The 1998 B Series refresh saw the return of the B3000 (3.0 L, V6) offered two additional engine families in the B2500 (2.5 L, 4 cylinder) and the B4000 (4.0 L, V6). The difference in power between the Mazda B3000 and Mazda B4000 trucks of this generation was, at first, negligible. The 1998 through 2000 models saw only a ten horsepower increase between the B3000 and the B4000. However, the 2001 and later engines on the B4000 have produced over 200 horsepower, giving the four liter V6 a definite power advantage over its slightly smaller cousin. This Sixth generation of Mazda trucks offered a few new options and features including a five speed automatic transmission, a four-door option for the extended cab, and other new updates and features.
