Mercedes 380SE

The Mercedes 380SE was one model in a series of vehicles representing the company's flagship line between 1979 and 1991. Built on the W126 platform, it was the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz Sonderklasse sedans, which first put the German automaker on the world map in the 1950s. The W126 S-Class introduced many innovative design elements and safety devices that were subsequently adopted for other Mercedes-Benz models.

1973 was the year of the first major oil crisis, when Arab countries staged an embargo against the West, sending gasoline prices skyward. Plans for the next generation S-Class were laid down that fall, with improved fuel efficiency being a major objective. Part of achieving that objective was to create a more aerodynamic body shape, made from lighter materials. The result was a design for a vehicle that offered 10% greater fuel efficiency than the previous model.

Despite the relative urgency of addressing higher fuel costs, it took Mercedes-Benz six years to bring the new W126 series - the end result of its "Energy Program" - to market, by which time there was yet another oil crisis sparked by unrest in Iran. Seven new models were introduced at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt that year, which included the gasoline powered 280, 380 and 500 SE/SEL and a diesel model, the 300SD. It was the beginning of a successful 12-year run that made the new S-Series a best selling luxury model throughout the subsequent decade.

In 1985, the series underwent some major design changes. Updates were made to the body styling and two additional six cylinder options were added, along with larger V8 engines. Other engines received technological upgrades as well. Many enhancements were added in order to enhance handling characteristics, including a self-leveling hydraulic suspension system as well as traction control and acceleration slip regulation in order to keep the wheels from spinning. Two major safety innovations are worth mentioning. One of these was the addition of "crumple zones," that absorbed the impact of a collision, protecting the occupants. Another was seat belt pretensioners. These allowed the safety belts to remain slack during normal driving, but would tighten up during sudden stops or when an accident was imminent. Inside, the Mercedes-Benz W126 models offered heated seats and fully automatic climate control, employing a thermostat in the cabin that made temperature automatic adjustments.

The 380SE itself was one of the first models to show up in dealer showrooms, in production from 1979 until 1985. It was powered by a 3.8 liter V8 engine. The Mercedes 380SE specs were just as impressive as those for other models in the series. When looking at a Mercedes 380SE for sale, make sure it has been maintained properly. Otherwise, you'll be purchasing a serious headache. 1984 Mercedes 380SE parts and those for other model years are available at generous discounts at, where you'll find normally expensive German auto parts for sale at up to 80% regular retail.
