Porsche 356C

World War Two had only been over for three years when Ferdinand Porsche, better know then as the designer of Germany's own version of the Model T - known to history as the VW Beetle - hand built the first sports car bearing his name in a garage in the small town of Gmünd, Austria. Over the next two years, 49 more Porsche 356 vehicles would come out of that garage before production was moved to a newly constructed factory outside of Stuttgart in Bavaria. That was the beginning of a legend; between 1950 and 1965, several thousand Porsche 356 roadsters and coupes made their way into showrooms across Europe and North America.

The story of the Porsche 356C really begins in the late 1930s, with a concept racing car known as the Porsche Type 64. Bearing some resemblance to a low-lying, overgrown Volkswagen Beetle, the Type 64 was made primarily of aluminum. Three of them were built prior to the outbreak of hostilities. Amazingly, one Porsche Type 64 managed to survive the war. It found its way into the collection of a professional Austrian motorcycle racer, and was actually driven in a vintage race held in Monterey, California in 1983. Most recently, this unique vehicle was on display in a museum in Atlanta, Georgia, and is currently owned by the Society for Friends of Classic Automobiles.

The Porsche 356 enjoyed early success, practically from the get-go. After winning numerous European races, the new Porsche drew the attention of motoring buffs and investors alike. It was almost an instant hit in the U.S., though relatively few found their way to this side of the Atlantic. One of the most famous American Porsche owners was actor James Dean, who off screen was a racing enthusiast. His enthusiasm ultimately led to his demise; he was killed while driving his Porsche 356A in the late summer of 1955.

The Porsche 356C was the last version of the 356 series, introduced in the fall of 1963 for the 1964 model year. This version featured four wheel disc brakes as well as a 95 horsepower, 1.6 liter, six cylinder "boxer" engine - the most powerful one yet installed on a Porsche. This particular engine was a "pushrod" model with overhead valves, a major improvement over previous engines. Over 14,000 of these cars were made during 1964. Even after its replacement by the Porsche 911 in 1965, the 356C continued to sell quite well. There were even a few convertibles made especially for civilian law enforcement in the Netherlands.

The Porsche 356C value for one fully restored and in good condition can range over $100,000 at auction. However, one can obtain a Porsche 356C replica for far less. Whether you can actually afford an original or have a "replicar" version, your first stop for parts and accessories should be PartsGeek.com. This website carries an extensive inventory of auto parts and accessories for virtually every make and model. In some cases, you'll find Porsche 356 parts for sale at discounts of up to 80%.

It was great to find this part for my 1964 Porsche 356C, however I was a little disappointed that it did not have the second wire that goes up to the solenoid. The wire is shown in the picture both when I ordered it and in the review request. - 1 Porsche 356C Bosch Ignition Condenser

This Febi CV boot kit was exactly what I needed and was high quality. My only complaint would be the clamps that came with the kit required a special tool to install. I had to go to the store and buy the common style clamps. Super fast delivery. - axel boot

decent price, good quality. doesn't fit exactly. No sealing gasket on bottom pf filter where it meets the filter housing, but then most filters for this application don't. Made a gasket out of foam weatherstrip as I found instructions for in a a forum. - decent price
