Mercedes 300SDL

In the 1980's, turbo was king. It didn't matter if your car was a racer or a dawdling. As long as it wore a "Turbo" badge, you and everyone else would think your car was quick because turbo meant speed. The issue was the time it took you to get up to speed. For the Mercedes' 300SDL, it was 10 seconds to 60 MPH. For a 3,800 pound diesel, that was pretty fast. Especially in the eighties. Mercedes-Benz has been offering diesel engines as an option on its cars since it introduced the world's first production diesel passenger car, the 260D, in 1936. Yet none combined durability and luxury in the manner of the 1980s diesel S-Class. In late 1978, in the Daimler-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen, West Germany, separate production facilities were set up for the new S-Class. Fuel shortages of the era had caused Mercedes to rethink its big cars, so the new W126 chassis was lighter and carried a more aerodynamic body, with a drag coefficient of just 0.36 The diesel S-Class was changed very little until the 1986 model year when the 300SD became the 300SDL, which featured a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbodiesel. This motor made 148 hp at 4600 rpm and 201 lb-ft of torque at 2400 rpm. The 300SDL had a 121.1-inch wheelbase, giving the 208.2-inch-long sedan some serious rear legroom. There were 5,509 300SDL models built in 1987, yet the 300SDL was discontinued after the model year

As a classic car that you keep protected from the elements in your garage, cleaning and tinkering with it every weekend and occasionally taking it out for a spin on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, this is a fantastically reliable and fun car. As a used car, one that you commute in, use for shopping and other essential family errands, it would be a nightmare. As a 30 year old vehicle, parts will be in various stages of wear. What will you do when a part fails and it takes six weeks before the replacement arrives? What happens when the gearbox starts to show signs of wear? How long will it sit around in the mechanic's garage before he gets around to refurbishing it? What happens when your expensive brakes fail and you need to spend a few months saving up for new ones? With good maintenance, your Mercedes 200SDL can easily clock a half a million miles. So take it to a good mechanic, and with a regular service it will be very good and reliable car.

The oil cooler hose is responsible for keeping the transmission and engine oil from overheating. The hose runs from the radiator to the transmission and the engine. The oil that is used to lubricate the engine and transmission circulates through the oil cooler hose to the radiator, If you notice oil leaking from the hose, even if the leak doesn't seem to bad, you should have it looked at, lest one day you realize you are losing a quart of oil a month. You might be able to slow the leak with self repair, but the smarter thing to do is go to partsgeek, where a plethora of Mercedes 200SDL oem and aftermarket parts are available, and buy a new one.
