Mercedes 300CE

The Mercedes 300CE debuted at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show. It was categorized as a four-place coupe. Though it was modeled based on the SEC, it had certain differences with the sedan. The overall length of the 300CE and its wheelbase were shorter than those of the sedan by 3.3 inches. The 300CE also stood out from the sedan with its Saab SPG-style contrasting-painted lower body panels. The coupé was missing B-pillars, but its windshield, floor and sills were reinforced. Both the sedan and the coupé had the same front section and tail-lamps as well as front-seat belts.

It ran on a 3.0 L M104 DOHC I6 engine in 1988 and 1989. 1991 also saw Mercedes introducing a convertible version, also called the cabriolet, in Europe, the United Kingdom and Japan. A 300CE-24 model was launched which came equipped with an M104 DOHC, 24-valve 2,964-cc engine with CIS-E continuous fuel injection. It was available both as coupé and as cabriolet. Both versions ran on the same engine.

Around the same time, the 300CE coupé, there were a few minor upgrades - a compression ratio of 10:1 added more power to the car. The engine could now crank up 162 kW and a torque of 195 lb-ft. A Sportline package was added in 1992 with a lower and firmer suspension coupled with wider wheels and tires. The cabriolet's insulated cloth roof was almost completely automatic -fitted with a heated glass window, it was operated by six hydraulic cylinders, ten valves and twelve switches.

Both the coupé and the cabriolet received the 3.2 L M104 DOHC 24-valve I6 engine in 1993. This also featured the HFM sequential fuel injection. The power remained unchanged but the torque went up to 229 lb-ft. A passenger front airbag was also added. The biggest changed in 1994 when the Mercedes 300CE were renamed to E 320 Coupé and Cabriolet with the birth of the Mercedes E-class.

Driving the Mercedes 300CE was a joy. Almost non-existent cabin noise and a suspension system which would remain stable across various road conditions made for an enjoyable and comfortable drive. However, it was alleged to have been not the best with respect to fuel consumption - on an average it would clock 16 miles per gallon on city roads and up to 20 miles per gallon on highways.
