Volvo 122

The Volvo 122 was launched in the United States as the 122s at the New York International Auto Show in 1959. It was a mid-size car marketed as the Volvo Amazon in Sweden. Although the Amazon was press-released in February 1956, delivery commenced only in August 1956 under the 120 series designation. The Volvo 122s happened to be one of the iterations of the Amazon in 1958 which came equipped with M40 and M41 gearboxes along with a dual carburetor engine. Three-point seat belts were made a standard and the first 122s were imported into the United Kingdom in November 1958.

The Volvo 122 ran on a 1.8 L naturally aspirated petrol engine manufactured by Volvo. It had straight four cylinders with 2 valves per cylinder. It could generate 63kW power at 5400 rpm and a maximum torque of 103 pound-feet at 3200 rpm. The engine could deliver its power through to the wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The engine layout was longitudinal the engine's position was in front. Maximum speed was claimed to be 148 km per hour or 92 miles per hour. The Volvo 122s ran on a 102.4 inches long wheelbase.

The different variants of the Volvo 122 had different engine types over the years. The Volvo 122 ran on a B16B engine from 1959 to 1961, followed by a B18D engine from 1962 to 1967. The Volvo 122, fitted with B18D engine, also came with front disc brakes. While 1968 saw the introduction of the B18B engine, the Volvo 122s was powered by a B20B in 1969 and 1970. They were sold in the United States as a two-door saloon for four or five people.

The Volvo 122 was considered a major improvement over the PV544 with more room on the interior and better outward visibility. In spite of debuting in 1956, the look and feel from behind the wheel hardly changed for the first eleven years, especially the gauge cluster which was nothing more than a horizontal strip dominated by a ribbon tachometer.

My 62 Volvo runs smoother with a cooler thermostat. The 180 degree thermostat is easy to find but the 170 degree is hard to find. It also has the sprung flange on the bottom, which is very important. The flange blocks the bypass pipe. Without the flange, part of the water flow will bypass the radiator when hot, causing it to overheat. It only took two days to get the part.

Very satisfied with this slave cylinder. Girling slave cylinders have failed after a year of use and cost more. Looking forward to a longer run with this one.
