Research on Water Pump for Mini Cooper

If your Mini Cooper overheats, you may have a bad water pump. This is a dangerous situation because overheated engines can sustain severe and costly damage to them. If you think that you have a Mini Cooper water pump leak or other problem, replace the part before you need to replace your entire engine. It will save you money in the long run, and if you know where to shop, you can save hundreds over the cost of taking your Mini Cooper to the dealer for the repair.

What is a Water Pump in a Car?

Though it's called the water pump, this device is actually responsible for pushing the coolant or antifreeze and water mixture through hoses around your engine. This pump is operated by a pulley and drive belt, making it a mechanically driven machine. Some models of Mini Cooper also have an electronically controlled auxiliary water pump that preserves more mechanical power for the engine. These auxiliary pumps were the subject of a recall and Mini Cooper water pump lawsuit.

Mini Cooper Water Pump Recall

BMW, which produces Mini Coopers, recalled certain models of 2007 through 2011 Mini Cooper S, Cooper Countryman S, and Cooper S Clubman. These vehicles were equipped with faulty auxiliary water pumps designed to cool the turbocharger. These water pumps had circuit boards that could catch on fire. If you own one of the recalled vehicles, take it to your BMW/Mini dealer to get the water pump replaced.

Signs of a Bad Water Pump

There will be several signals your Mini Cooper will send to you letting you know that the engine's water pump is going bad. A check engine light and a code are often the most obvious, but you may see other symptoms before you can pull the trouble code. Turn on the heater. If air coming from the vents is cool rather than warm, coolant may not be circulating around the engine, suggesting a problem with the water pump. A rise in your temperature gauge or an overheat light on your dash can also indicate a bad water pump. Noises when the engine is running may mean that you have a water pump that tries to run but cannot. When any of these signs appear, check the cooling system, and if there is definitely a problem with the water pump, get it replaced as soon as possible.

How Much is a Water Pump for a Car?

If your water pump is not one of the recalled ones, you will likely have to pay to replace it yourself. A 2012 Mini Cooper water pump replacement cost ranges anywhere from $559 to $703 with the parts and labor, but if you feel sure of your ability to repair your Mini Cooper, you can save hundreds of dollars in labor costs if you install the new pump yourself. To get more savings, look for the best deal on your Mini Cooper water pump online at a site like where you can get discounted prices on hundreds of Mini Cooper parts, including water pumps and auxiliary water pumps.

Reviewer: Good Part

I called my local Mini dealer who wouldn't tell me the brand they used, but my local Mini mechanic told me HEPU is the brand he uses, so I purchased this, and it was here on time and fit and works perfectly! Ironically once we replaced this part, the water pump pulley wore down on the same day, I had to go to the local Mini dealership to buy this piece and we took the car apart again and replaced the pulley as well. Just a note - if you're replacing the WP, check the wear and tear on the pulley.

Not all parts shown are included, did not included part that attaches to the block on the one I got. not sure if it was just a one off. but the pump works great.

2004 Mini Cooper Water Pump

Very Satisfied
Reviewer: First HEPU pump; looks solid

The pump flange on this pump is aluminum, but the impeller is still phenolic; some have reported the pump has a metal impeller. The OEM pump had a phenolic flange too. The OEM pump was fine; I only changed it because I was changing a failed thermostat housing and had to refill the cooling system anyway.

The HEPU pump shaft is longer than the OEM part, so you will have to disconnect the upper engine mount and lower the engine to install it; no worries. You have to do that anyway to get to the friction wheel bolts; the pump won't come out unless you pull the friction wheel.

Reviewer: Hope it lasts longer than the factory pump

Pump has an aluminum housing, factory replacement had plastic. Why does the Mini eat water pumps? Perhaps they could give Honda a call!
