Research on Water Pump for BMW 525i

The water pump keeps your BMW 525i's engine cool by ensuring that the coolant constantly circulates around the hot engine. When your water pump fails or develops a leak, you need to replace the pump to avoid causing more harm to other engine parts like belts. Though BMW e39 water pump replacement costs can be in the hundreds of dollars, it's a critical replacement to make to protect your engine from overheating and requiring thousands of dollars of repairs.

What is the Water Pump?

The water pump pushes coolant around the engine block when the engine runs. The thermostat opens when the coolant reaches a given temperature to allow it to pass through to the radiator, but a bad water pump does not keep the coolant moving, which means that it cannot draw heat from the engine to be released to the air at the radiator. A faulty water pump will keep your engine from cooling itself, resulting in overheating and possible severe damage.

BMW e39 Water Pump Failure Symptoms

When your water pump fails, you'll notice several things happen to your vehicle. The temperature gauge will rise, and if your engine begins to overheat too much, it may shut itself down, but if it doesn't, pull over, shut off your BMW, and wait for your engine to cool before driving anywhere. Do not open your hood if you see smoke or steam coming from under the hood because it's dangerously hot around an overheated engine. Turn on the heater when driving to see if hot or cold air is coming out. If cold air comes out of the heater, you likely have a problem with the water pump because coolant circulates to pick up heat from the engine to warm the air for your cabin heater. You might also notice on a visual inspection a loose pulley or leaks from around the water pump.

Why a Failed Water Pump is Dangerous

When your water pump fails, it can cause the engine to overheat. One of the foremost precursors to a blown head gasket is an overheated engine, and it can cost you into the thousands to replace the head gasket and fix any other secondary damage from that. If you have a leaking water pump, the coolant that drips from it can cause damage to the timing and drive belts under the hood, and the coolant level will drop, eventually leading to the damaging situation of driving without enough coolant to cool the engine, which can cause overheating.

Cost for a BMW 525i Water Pump Replacement

If you take your BMW to a dealer or mechanic, you might pay hundreds of dollars for a new water pump. For example, a 2006 BMW 525i water pump costs from $799 to $1150. This cost includes the new water pump, coolant, gaskets, and clamps that are needed. If you can install your own water pump, get it from to reap huge savings over the full cost your mechanic or dealer would charge you. These two steps, self-installation and buying from, can save you hundreds of dollars on getting a new water pump for your 525i.

2006 BMW 525i Pierburg water pump looks just like the original equipment but for half the price. My guess is the pump is made by the same manufacturer. The water pump mounted perfectly into place where the original electric water pump was removed from. Do your self a favor and buy the pierbur water pump and save the money for other upgrades.
