Research on Vacuum Pump for Ford F150

A vacuum pump is a device that helps high performance engines by adding a bit of extra horsepower. As added benefits, the vacuum pump helps to keep oil cleaner, thus extending the life of your engine. Specifically, the Ford F150 Ecoboost vacuum pump helps the brakes work better. Unfortunately, as has been the case with a number of Ford components recently, there has been a Ford F150 Ecoboost vacuum pump recall. Fortunately, there are replacements for the OEM part, and these aftermarket vacuum pumps are usually a distinct improvement over the originals.

The Why and Wherefore

When an engine has a turbocharger, there will be times that a cold engine - one that is started on a cold morning after sitting all night - is not able to produce enough vacuum in order to run the power brake booster. In most vehicles, the power brakes run off the vacuum created by the engine itself. However, when there is a turbocharger involved, that vacuum is not always available. This is the reason and the function of the Ford F150 brake vacuum pump. The Ford F150 Ecoboost vacuum pump for the 2011 and 2012 model years was electrically powered. Located directly behind the left-hand side headlight, this particular model was either noisy - or just didn't work at all (meaning you had no power brakes until the engine warmed up). Although the F150 vacuum pump recall was not mandated by government agencies for safety reasons, the Ford Motor Company voluntarily extended the warranty on affected vehicles up to ten years or 150,000.

Replacing the Vacuum Pump

The good news is that replacing a vacuum pump is not difficult. It can be accomplished in about thirty minutes with nothing more than basic hand tools. If you have it done professionally, plan on spending at least $700. However, it you're willing to do it yourself, you can do it for well under $300. Basically, you start out by getting under the hood and unscrewing the clip fastening the rubber shroud that shields the headlamp assembly from the radiator so you can take the headlight out. This will give you ready access to the vacuum pump itself. Disconnect the electrical connection, then get under the truck and take out the two bolts that hold it in place - and as they say on the other side of the pond, "Bob's your uncle." Once that is done, the new one slips right back in.

Inexpensive Vacuum Pumps?

There are different types of Ford F150 Ecoboost vacuum pump replacements by several different aftermarket manufacturers. They range in price from around $75 to almost $300. carries a number of different models from which to choose, though the replacement for the 2012 and 2011 Ford F150 brake vacuum pump is on the high end of that price range. You probably won't find it cheaper anywhere else, since PartsGeek offers some of the lowest prices around.
