Research on Turn Signal for Volvo 850

There is a joke that apparently goes around in small rural towns: nobody needs turn signals because everyone know where everyone else is going. So much for humor. The fact is, no matter where you live, whether it is in the city or the country, it is important to let others - motorists as well as pedestrians - to know of your intentions. Not everyone remembers to do this, however. Not having reliable turn signals mean you are at risk for an accident, and you may be at risk for sparking a "road rage" incident. Besides that, if a traffic officer notices you're failing to signal, you'll wind up with an expensive citation.

How Turn Signals Work

Although they seem simple, turn signals represent fairly sophisticated technology. For the driver, it's simple: just flip the lever on your steering column up or down, and there it is. First however, the system needs to get electricity from the battery (this is why your turn signals don't function when the ignition switch is turned off). This power makes its way into the system by way of a device called a "thermal flasher." Mounted on the vehicle's fuse panel, the thermal flasher routes that electricity to your turn signal lever. It is not a costly device; they run approximately three bucks. It looks like a miniature tin can, which contains electrical contacts that open and close with the assistance of a small spring. Pushing or lifting on the turn signal lever opens and closes the circuit, thus activating your signals.

How It Turns Off

When everything is in operational condition, under normal circumstances, the turn signal lever simply springs back into its center position when you have completed your turn or lane change. This works by way of a notched hub that is mounted on the steering shaft inside the column. Once you lift or push down on the turn signal lever, a spring-loaded roller clicks into a notch, which holds the lever in place. At the same time, a smaller lever holds that hub in place while you are making your maneuver. Once the steering wheel is returned to its original position, the entire mechanism releases.

What's New in Turn Signals

These days, turn signals are often made part of the outside door mirrors, using LED bulbs. They are mounted in such a way that they are clearly visible to other drivers, but to not distract you. Not all vehicles have these, but it is well worth looking into getting a retrofit or upgrade for your car. One place to check out is, a discount internet-based retailer of auto parts and accessories. With approximately ten million products in stock, they are very likely to have exactly what you need at a lower price than you will find anywhere else.

I ordered this item online and it came exactly as advertised. The price was 30 percent cheaper then others that advertised and it is OEM. (It is not some knock-off brand)

The only thing that I did not like about my order is that I also ordered another part at the same time and that item was shipped from another Parts Geek warehouse which made me pay for shipping twice.
