Research on Timing Belt for Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai's expanded options for its 2017 Santa Fe include the choice between two or four-wheel drive, six or seven-seat configurations, and four distinct trim levels. Hyundai has also upgraded its Santa Fe with typical mid-cycle updates like freshened styling and more onboard technology. Every 2017 Santa Fe receives new wheels, new headlights, a new grille, and new front and rear bumpers. None of Hyundai's changes for the 2017 Santa Fe will disrupt the tried and true formula of offering a plethora of standard features in an attractive, comfortable package. The only difference is that now buyers will have more options from which to choose.

In older vehicles, the timing belts were only used to synchronize camshafts and crankshafts. Today they are often used to drive the water pumps as well. The timing belts keep the valves and the pistons working in a precise order. Each valve and piston combination must push down on the individual cams on a camshaft at just the right time. Timing belts prevent the pistons and the valves from pushing on the camshaft before it has reached a full cycle.

What happens if the timing belt fails?

The engine will stop and the vehicle won't move. If it fails while driving, it can cause catastrophic damage to the engine. Another timing belt mishap can occur if the valves and pistons drive themselves into the camshaft, causing them to just bend and break. There is seldom significant warning of incipient timing belt failure, so the best prevention may well be early replacement.

Timing belt replacement is not a job for DIY amateurs. Many peripheral parts must be removed for it to become accessible. Also, the new timing belts must exactly match the old ones, which is a time-consuming job even for professionals. When the timing belt has been replaced, the mechanic must synchronize the camshaft and the crankshaft with a special kind of strobe light. This job of repairing the broken timing belt could take several hours.

When the mechanic replaces your timing belt, he may also suggest the water pump be changed, as just about all the work is done to replace the water pump when the timing belt is being changed, so it won't require any extra labor. If, however, you experience water pump failure at a later stage, all that work would have to be repeated and you would have to pay for the labor involved.

What are the symptoms of a bad timing belt?

Common signs of timing belt failure include a ticking noise coming from the engine, an engine that won't turn over, engine misfires, and oil leaking in front of the motor.

What is the Hyundai Santa Fe Timing Belt Kit replacement cost?

The average cost for a Timing Belt Replacement is between $393 and $514. Labor costs are estimated between $264 and $333 while parts are priced between $129 and $181. PartsGeek sale prices its Dayco timing belt kit for the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe Timing Belt Kit at $127.33.

Reviewer: Do it yourself timing belt

I had the timing belt replaced on my other Hyundai at the dealership and they charged me over $500. My son opted to do it this time since the Santa Fe allows him a little more working space. What a savings and the parts are a good quality!

2005 Hyundai Santa Fe Timing Belt Kit

Everything fit and appears to be good quality. It would be nice if this came with a new belt tensioner, idler pulley, and serpentine belt (since you have to remove these to be able to change the timing belt). The water pump gasket needs to be laid flat between two heavy books while you're getting started on the repair.
